JunkYardFrog;yes, cracked the block[4th one] even after using HardBlok to strengthen the walls on this last one!!The pistons on a 3.4"stroker are so short and the rod ratio is so bad it tries to stuff the piston out through the block. It couldn't have anything to do with 13+CR and 8000RPM!!!!I've had the 418 short block for a while, putting better pistons in,using my roller cam and heads, everything else[out of necessity]is new. If I knew how to bring a video onto this thread I would put up one from inside my Comet. You can hear that little engine screaming for mercy[NEVER]and banging through the gears!! What part of California are you in? Dale and I have been known to haunt Irwindale on Thursday evenings!!! There is a video of my Comet on page 50,post#990.ROY.

I wonder if the white one is having an issue or is it tire smoke from locking a brake up.

I met the guy that owns the 64 Comet at a car show.It is a daily driver[sort of] but set up for track days,347,5 speed,4 wheel disc brakes, roll cage, nice wheel-tire combo. He told me the Fairlane was coming apart, smoking everyone out!! Ken,is the 64 back together yet?I'm still amassing parts for the new engine, this is getting real old[and expensive],I hope this one lasts longer!!My clutch is completely done, flywheel is warped, pressure plate is warped, disc is GONE!!! Tell me about it! Pin in cam gear problems with mine bent all 16 valves. I'm just glad it went advanced or it would have taken out the cam lifters and maybe whole motor. Still a grand for valves, the correct springs, 7/16 ARP studs, comp cam pro magnum roller rockers and head set up at machine shop. The good news is I think I found a machinist that actually knows what he is doing ( Ford man also).

Unless the late models are lapping them. That white one is a Saleen GT2, which would have little trouble gathering up a '63 Fairlane. Much as I'd like to see the old cars staying ahead, I think they are just enjoying a mixed track day event.

I was the one inquiring about Shake Rattle & Roll Comet! Was wondering where it went after Fords @ Carlisle! would love to own it! Like you..myself, was talked out of buying it in the late 80's/early 90's. This is the car that got me into lovin the Comets. Do you have any pictures to share? Thanks Jason

  14. Hi,

I used to own a 64 1/2 Cyclone and and I posted pics of it here back when this thread was new. I know a lot about '64s but my library of information is short on '65s. I have come across what I believe to be an authentic warranty plate off of a B/FX car, along with its Ford disclaimer tag. Both were removed by a body shop in Ypsilanti, MI in the 70s. Does anyone here know of anywhere that I verify what I have?
The tag says that the car was a Cyclone, Carnival red, 4sp, "A" code 289 4v, built on May 14, 1965 in Los Angeles.

    Thanks,
    Ken

You could probably check with Bill Stroppe in Long Beach,Bill is gone but the business is still there. The Comets were built there so there is a good chance with it being a LA build and it being a Cyclone it could have been true.I believe all the Mercury Racing personnel are gone now.You could also check with Rick Kirk in Oklahoma,he did a lot of work with Ford.It seems there is more information available on the 64s than the 65s. ROY.

  16. Thanks Roy,

I'll try both of those leads. The name Rick Kirk sounds familiar to me, is he active on this Board?
Also, what is the significance of the 6 character DSO vs 2? This tag's DSO translates to "Home Office Reserve, Special Order Unit "

    Regards.
    Ken

Do you have the vin number all the FX cars where in sequence and the 6 digit DOS meant that it was a special order.

  18. Yes, I do. The order number is 7548 and the sequence is 515233 in LA

Ken;I don't think Rick is on here.He has a 65 B/FX Comet that has been in the magazines[years back]and I believe there is a photo or two of his Comet on here.Being a Special Order and an LA build is a good start in finding the answers. ROY.
