We don't get political here... it'll get threads closed but I will add this. It doesn't matter whom we have in leadership if we, as Americans, don't get our ducks in a row. How can we expect others to have integrity if we (as a people) don't have it ourselves? I know plenty of people whom complain about their money issues (and the Government's too) and cannot balance their personal check books.

Now, to keep this more on topic, "hot rod money" won't ever be there if we spend willy-nilly and don't pay attention to what we're doing. I was shocked to see how much money I was throwing away when I started paying attention. It gave me the worst gut-wrenching pit in my stomach. It didn't go away until my new habits started showing positive effects. It's a slippery slope, too. There were plenty of times I wanted to splurge on parts (some of which were just a good deal... that I didn't need) but I knew if I did that I'd ruin a lot of good work I had done.

It's really like committing to a hot rod diet. I sold off everything I knew I wouldn't use and put the money aside. After doing so, every part on my shelves was something destined for a project. It provided me with a lot of clarity. I've got to do it again, this Spring, but it's a lot less stuff and it's much easier now that I get what I need and get rid of what I don't.

I can admit, I've got a few vintage items that I've kept for some unkown, future build, but they're rare pieces and they're in the same style of the stuff I'm into. So, I justify it that way.

About 6 months ago I the cash saved up to blast the entire body of my 34 pickup. Times got hard so I had to use the money for more important things. Now I have resorted to blasting myself with a TSC blaster. It works good but takes forever. I actually may even save money compaired to paying someone.

It makes me feel better I'm not the only one who's broke. My wife is disabled and has yet to get any disability from S.S. I'm a mechanic so you guys probably know that's not a real high paying job. I've sold all my old cars and my truck to make ends meet. Now my wife is pregnant so I've got that going for me too. I'm blessed that we eat and have a roof over our heads. I'm blessed to have a baby on the way. Any time money comes to me it gone the next day paying a bill or fixing the house or just to fill the tank. At least my cars went to people who keep me updated and send pictures of the progress. At least the HAMB keeps me feeling like I'm still fixing up somebodies old car or at least a little bench racing.

Hate being broke? You will despise going hungry. Stock up in bulk at the Costco/Sams Club to save. Share a ride when you go some where. Food went up roughly 30% world wide last year. It's coming. -Depression-. But we are here for the car's. And I'm thinning my stash and herd as of now. Bare Bones isn't just a camshaft in my car, it's my new lifestyle. Good-luck everyone.

    from nowhere...

I've been threatening to appear at the Jalopy Showdown drags with my truck ...for...well...since the first one!
I just refuse to give up ( though I threaten to a lot...) and budget my cash tightly, nowadays. I scratch together my parts, and tool money, fo' sho, even if I have been missing all the "hot-roddy-cool-ass-good-time-events" over the last couple years. Fuck it, I'll be back when I'm back...right now, I'm building, slowly, but I am.
Sometimes, you even need to cut out the "hot-rodding" itself, in order to finish a car, it seems...:(
But...whatever it takes, the project must come first, after food and shelter, in times of small means.
They are, at present, my ONLY non-essential priority, as well as my excercise, my vacation, my savings, and my past time.

Mazooma, don't double down on the first comment and get a flame war started. It doesn't help to add your view, THEN quote the rules...that's slappy. And to be honest, when did ANY person in power actually do ANYTHING to really respect founding documents, law, or common decency for the sake of the greater good? PUBLIC SERVICE should be just that....PUBLIC service. Start mixing up profit in what should be profit-free, trouble ensues.

Another good thread will bite the dust. The guy's already been chided.

As for the OP's predicament....I feel your pain. We HAVE to move this year from NJ to CA for my work (or increasingly decreasing amount of) , my wife's new job cut her pay a BUTTLOAD after her last job set her up to be a fall guy so her manager could bail from the department and move up after he pinned all blame on her, and the arrival of our firstborn with no close friends or family within 1000miles necessitate getting rid of our house. We bought responsibly, but no one wants the house....so...what do you do? Welfare of me and mine or the banks? Not a hard decision seeing we can't afford it anymore, but why does it have to be like planning a f**king heist? Lawyers, CPAs, advisors.....that stuff cost cash. This country is in a world of hurt, moreso if you have a family and/or house...supposed to be the American Dream, right?
