  1. So, going to be having an audio system put in my 1956 Ford and was wondering what speaker covers to go with. My two choices are the music note ones or organ pipes. Does anyone know what year either of these came out. I am sort of building my car around 1958. Are organ pipes a little later than that?

Ya know i've ALWAYS wondered why no one makes some nice clean simple speaker covers.
I mean why is there only two options?
Why not just a simple mesh type cover?
    Just wondering.

I would give both of those a two thumbs down.
FatLucky used a black guitar cloth? over mine. Very suttle, doesn't block any sound.

My speakers are behind this cloth

X2.. the old oval ones made from painted perforated metal; tiny round holes. That's what everyone used in the mid 60s. That car would be happier with plain ones.

  5. Im not liking either. I usually see the organ pipes on a lot of lowriders but other than that you may be able to fabricate something simple yourself. I like the idea with the guitar cloth.

The repop '57 Chevy rear package tray speaker covers fit a 6x9. are nice and clean, and are actually relatively inexpensive to buy. Consider grabbing a pair of those and running them, they'd certainly be period correct. I'd rather have that than those musical note ones, I hate those. I like the organ pipes but only on a 60's lowrider.

IMHO, neither will work on your car,, ive used impala dash speaker covers(late 50's rectangluar, you can usually find them at swapmeets or ebay pretty cheap) in package trays they look pretty good and you paint them the same color as the package tray....

I usually just cut the board on the package tray (to a 6x9) and leave the cloth over the hole so it doesn't even look like there are speakers there. I then adjust my EQ to make up for the cloth covering the speakers. Works well, and has never let me down! :D

  9. Well, I was going to put angel hair over the package tray and wanted something nice a shiny. Does anyone know what year the music note ones came out? Also what year did people start putting angel hair in cars? Thanks!

Honestly...Neither. I think the organ pipes werent around then and the music note look too kitch. I would grab some little pages from then and thumb through the accessory sections and see what was available at that time period.

  11. Well, the car is going in to get done soon. My little books are in a different country. Do you know what year the music note ones would have come out? Thanks!

I put a lot of thought into speakers for mine as well and contemplated both that you have shown. I sort of like the music note one even though it is a little "JC Whitney".

In the end, I went to radio shack and bought some plain steel ones. This was about 10-15 years ago. I don't know if they still make such a thing, but they fit the vibe pretty well. I thought about painting them white to blend in, but they look pretty good as well in my opinion.

Pics aren't very clear, but you get the idea. These are metal with slots in them.

Cool car by the way. Love the upholstery.

Found a better pic of the Radio Shack style with the slots and also some other similar style metal grilles. Do a google for 6x9 speaker grille under images and there are a number of them out there that have a vintage flair...

Some of these are actually early Mustang or Camaro, but they still look "right" to me for your car...

I flipped through a '56 JC Whitney and found this...

It was the only speaker cover that was for package tray mounting in the catalog. Everything else was rear seat speakers that were sort of contoured.

I have to find my later JCW's but I'm pretty sure the first ones to come out had a treble clef...then the music note ones were also available around the same time but if I were trying to not be cliche I'd find some treble clefs. I think the organ pipes were the same era, about '57 or '58.

I did check my 1958 Honest Charlie catalog but it didn't have them. Probably because they added minimal horsepower!:D

This is going from bad to worse. I've been around cars since I was born in 1946 and have never seen angel hair on the package tray on any car in that time. Unless it is a regional thing in some area. As the other guys said the pipe organ things have almost always been an exclusive low rider thing, at least in this area were they still use them. I'd go for the not showing at all or the subtle 57 Chevy style that doesn't attract a lot of attention except for the few guys who end up thinking "oh, clean" when they see them there. Sometimes guys just try too hard to be cute with things in their cars and miss the mark entirely.

By "angel hair" do you mean the stringy fiberglass-like stuff guys used to put in the engine compartment and wheel wells or the stuff that looks like a Muppet pelt?

Ha. Just found 2 radio shack speaker grilles on that unmentionable auction site. They are being sold as a pair, but Unfortunately ONE is oval and ONE is rectangle just like mine! Not exactly a matched set! They are new in the package. I typed in radio shack speaker grille as a search. Surely someone else has some old stock out there if that is what you like.

Found these too. Also radio shack but looks like an earlier version to me. Sold and gone on the auction site at a $51 bid... Kind of cool.

    Lots of options.

The Chevy/GMC covers are original style, so they would obviously have been available at that time, but maybe not popular. I like them though I don't know if they fit a 6x9 or not.

Here is a photo of the 57 Chev style (original) that some people have commented on. Simple, but still not my favorite.

Well, I have seen for a fact they had it at shows in 1960. Don't forget the Pharaohs Merc had angel hair in the package tray.
