  1. Are you sure angel hair was around in the late '50s? If so thanks a lot!

  2. I like those, any other information; i.e. part number, name, etc. Thanks those I like!

  3. Not really a fan of that style. Just not for me.

Those two choices are poor (pipes or notes), IMO speakers should be heard and not seen. Too bad you cut off the column shift.

  6. I don;t care what people here like or don't like. I would run it if it goes with the era of my car. Look at that Lincoln in the LBCC or Gambino's "Slip Away". Angel hair is cool. Just not sure if it was around in the late fifties? I am still learning the ways of tradition;)

  7. I did NOT cut off the column shifter. That was done by the pervious owner. I hate having a shifter on the floor. Would much rather have it on the column.

I hunted for 5 years for a set of speaker grills for my '61 Suburban. I wanted something that looked factory, was metal, and not crap. I FINALLY found a set of these rectangular ones at Charlotte a couple weeks ago for $10 for the pair. I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough! Anyone know what their original application was?

I'm going to mount them in the recessed section of the panels that run down the whole interior of the truck, next to where the rear seat is. They'll look "right" there, like the factory could have installed them in that location.
I really wanted to find a set of the oval ones shown below. I don't like the repro'd '57 Chevy package tray speakers, because they're made completely of mesh, rather than a meshed center with a solid perimeter.
I do know that '54-'56 Buicks with the optional rear seat speaker came with the solid perimeter-style grills, so I'm guessing the Cads and Olds did too.
I normally dig clean, subtle and tasteful, and speaker grills are definitely one of those areas where less is more.
But on Mitchell's car, I can also see the angle hair on the package tray, and if that's gonna be there, then it's gotta be organ pipes. You need something to visually stand up in that hair, otherwise it just looks like you matted the angle hair down and screwed the cover over it. It won't look right with the flat speaker grille.

Why is everyone giving old moose knuckle here a hard time? IMHO As long as you like it, no one else matter, but personally I really like just the simple chrome mesh....Post pictures when you finish it.

  11. Just foe the hell of it to see what other people have to say. In the long run it is still my car. Since I started this thread I will obviously not be running organ pipes as they will not fit the era of my car. I suppose I shouldn't put my bias-ply tires on I just bought, or do a tube grill, or put '55 Mercury Station Wagon tailights in my car then because that was just a fad that died away. I should probably sell my car and get a Honda Civic lower it, put a giant ass exhaust tip on it, and cover it with stickers. Then I can be a part of the fad;)

When I did my 64 Malibu I got a set of oval ones similar to the pics Redline and Brad have show from a industrial sound company in town. They specialize in custom installs in buildings.

They are a painted cover with stamped holes and a rim and instead of screws have studs welded on the back.

That was about ten years ago.

Might be a possible source in your town.

I usually look for an old speaker box to go under the dash.

Depending on what sound your looking for you can update the speaker to a modern speaker, or if you like that crusty static noise just leave it be and run it. :D

To me both choices look a little gay?

I like the mesh on my box.

OK. This is what I've always known "Angel Hair" to be...

That was from the 1962 Spotlite Book "Custom Upholstering".

Then there is this stuff from a 1964 JC Whitney,

I had one of the "Furry Deck Mats" and it wasn't the hairy Muppet stuff. It was more like white low-pile carpet!

stanlow69 I like your choice. Can that be done with pleated fabric?

  17. Well, after hearing what most people have said. I think both choices wont fit the period I'm going for. As far as the front of the vehicle goes I am going to have hidden speakers under the seat and a speaker under the stock speaker grill on the dash. I am going to have all modern technology just all hidden so you wont see it.

  18. Do you have a picture of it? Did it look something like this...

That could pass for it. The one I had was exactly like home carpeting...only white. The disappointment was such, I never opened it and used it. Sold it maybe 5 years ago for twenty-something dollars to someone who no doubt just has it sitting also. I did have some from the mid-to-late seventies that were the hairy type like you pictured. Gold, blue, gray...they looked like they'd be a nightmare to install and keep down. I used to collect all these accessories but after a while it just starts to look like a bunch of junk!

Edit...sorry no pics. They were wiped out when my PC caught a virus.

I used thes on the van and just painted them to match the panel they mount on. You could do the same.

Another idea is to get these and then perforate sone of your kick panel material and cover them up.

Denise, This gets my vote as the way to go.

QUOTE=hotrodladycrusr;6470423]I would give both of those a two thumbs down.
FatLucky used a black guitar cloth? over mine. Very suttle, doesn't block any sound.

My speakers are behind this cloth

  23. Thanks, in that picture I posted do you think someone could have used that material in the late '50's?

  24. Do you remember where you got them? I am thinking about getting a pair and then just having them chromed.

  25. Hmm looks like to much going on IMO

I think it "could" have been used but I think it was as plentiful as animal prints. Sure there are some who would have used it but for the most part it was just rolls and pleats. Same with the speaker grilles. Those type of things were finishing touch "show" type of items like the color coordinated fuel, water, and oil cans and the TV in the trunk.:p
