FLAMING RIVER STEERING RACK ((for cowl steering))

Quick question guys...looking at buying a flaming river steering (((BOX))) from my buddy. He purchased it from Summit and says he THINKS it will work just fine for a cowl steering set up. it is 16:1, 36 spline 3/4, manual and is a REAR STEER. It is set up just like the old mopar steering boxes where the steering shaft comes straight out and the pitman arm shaft goes out at a 90degree. I guess my question is, does it matter if that box is a (rear steer) or a front steer. The part number for this box at summit is FLA-FR1540

Umm, Can you explain how you are going to do cowl steering with a rack and pinion? Hows that work?

it's going on a 38 international D-2 Pickup

 

Cowl steering on a International...now that's traditional.

 

Gee...if we only had a picture of the box instead of having to go off memory or go to Summit and do a search etc....

 

Whats ironic Rich is some Intl Combines have the PERFECT box for cowl steering! TomH's yellow modified runs one.

Please tell me this pickup is going to have fenders.....................so no cowl steering needed, no? Awe ****

 

OK...I did the search...$515.00 for basicly a replacement Dodge steering box?

I don't think it will need to be reversed...but check it anyway.

With the width of the PU cab you will likely need to lengthen the steering shaft somehow.
More money to spend. Gotta do it right!

Will the 16-1 ratio be acceptable with the longer pitman arm you'll likely need due to cab height?

With the width of the cab will you have enough clearance for a left turn before the tire hits the draglink?

Just some questions that come to mind.

 

Thank you very much for the info, I did come across some posts of guys who did exactly what your taking about; (Lengthing the steering shaft) One thing I don't know is because that cab is so tall, how that longer pitman arm is going to work. I'm doing the body work on the cab right now and still need to set up all the front end parts I have and build the frame soooo I can't even mock up everything yet just to see how long that arm is going to be compared to a stock length. I will call Flaming River tomorrow and see if the rear steer box will work for this set up.
