Threw some sketches together on some "what if" type scenarios for the rear of my 54 Plymouth coupe. I intend to shave the trunk lid, relocate the gas filler neck, and smooth/tuck in the bumper regardless of anything else, but just figured I'd throw these up and see what you guys think!

    Stock:

    With flipped 55 olds taillights:

With 54 Merc tail lights and slightly extended quarter lowers:

With 55 Plymouth quarter uppers and taillights grafted on:

    First up, Awesome sketches!

My 2c, i'd go with the Olds tail lights, a nice subtle modification.

I dig the Mercs, but remove that ugly trim on top of the quarter, if you do.

Hmm. I actually like the rear fender fins, but i think you have a good point, I dont think they work as well withthe merc lights.. I'll change that sketch up for the sake of conversation and to make the "looks" more different from one another.

Really like the 55 Plymouth...BUT...sounds as tho' there's already one on a 53 and folks would probably think it's stock......The Merc (without the fin trim) gets my vote!...and NICE ARTWORK!

Love your drawings. wish I could sketch like that to get ideas down.
    I had a play.

I imagined the fins kinda sloping outwards.

55 Olds, but remove the top trim, or the 55 plymouth is also very nice. Mercs been done alot, and inmy opinion doesn't suit the car as well as the other two.

It's been done before, but 52 Lincolns (a la Hirohata Merc) look gret in these, as well!

  21. i like the olds and the plymouth but i dont know which one i like more. maybe olds for a mild car and plymouth for a little bit wilder car

some more thoughts in reference to some of the things mentioned:

This one is more for the fun of it than anything else...

  24. that last one ^^

I like the 55 olds ones, and think the flipped fins are a distraction and don't compliment the body profile or curves.

    Cheers,

    Drewfus:)

How about moving the stock lights up in the quarter, so the light fits into the curve of the quarter?

    (only did near side)

I had a '53 Plymouth about 1961 and worked part time at a body shop (I was 17) and did the '55 Plymouth taillight conversion and really liked it. Imagine my surprise to see your renderings which are, by the way, absolutely terrific.

That said, while I do really like the '55 Ply lights, I also think you have a winner in both the '54 Merc and '53 Lincoln lamps. Yes, they have been done before, but NOT on '53 Plymouths, at least those I have seen. With the '54 Mercs I also prefer them without the little chrome fins, although they are not a deal breaker.

the flipped 55's look pretty rightous and I doubt any one not extremely familiar with Mopars could guess what they were.

Chris, I am really digging the 55 Plymouth quarters> I have to say, flipping the 55 tail lights has a cool look about it, too. Also dig the Merc taillights without the trim fins! Killer sketches, man!

I'm partial to the 55 Royal treatment. Different but cool!
