Yeah fun, but that night we didn't want to beat Gates in the first round because we were booked in Kansas City the next day. Ronnie told Gates he was broke and couldn't make the next round. After leaving Charlotte at 0 dark earlywe travled 1,100 miles in 17 hours which meant bolonge, gas beer and piss but we rolled into KCIR and won the race. Now it's hard to drive 100 miles. I think if I had a funny behind me I might be able to handle it again.

What makes this picture so cool is that background, terrian yet tractored, was later to be one of the best damn motocross tracks ever. Hard as concerete blue groove, steep hills and near shear drop offs. While I never made a pass down the 1/4, I did have the pleasure of racing the MX track a few times. Very sad that this venue is gone.

Just to clarify -- Karbelt car(s) were first; Drag Dimensions was the later one, and if memory serves, also the one that had the Hemi. I saw it in the DD shop when it had just been painted.

Would love to know if the rumours that were circulating a couple of years ago, about one of the Percys being restored, ever were proven true.

Several variations of the "Flying Junk Man" from Mansfield, Ohio, Virgil Cates. He set two different class records on the same day causing the NHRA to change some rules. This was a kick ass car.

VERY COOL! Probably the only footage I have ever seen of the Mike Sullivan Fiat in action. Thanks for sharing.

This is Ray Alley in the P-51 34 Coupe. Jim Lytle was it's previous owner and driver. This thing was heavy and fast. It was a funny car before there were funnies. Wonder where Ray is today? He worked with Bernstein in the early 90's and then for NHRA for awhile. Rumors from a recent cacklfest was he was in Mexico. If so, he better leave because it is more dangerous than driving a funny or jet car-which he did both.

  13. Seen this car many times run at Lions, brought back some memories and made me think of The Orange Crate... Any pictures??

1971 was the beginning of the end as far as I'm concerned....
If all you've seen is videos from 1971 or earlier, you'll just never, ever understand...sorry, you just won't...
