What is is that makes some of you guys get into a build then stop and start building something else only to have that pattern repeat again and again and not wanting to let loose of the project that you started years ago, that you will most likely never get back to anyways? phfew....I only ask because I ran into a guy the other day that had so many projects started and told me straight to my face that he wouldn't finish the one that I liked, but he also said that, "no, guy...I just don't think i can let go of it". Really????? So, when somebody like me is trying to get started on the ground level of project building and comes across this kind of "individual", it kind of pisses me off. Ya know? Why not jsut let loose of the one project that you don't think you'll finish because it's "junk" or whatever reason. Always remember....one man's junk....

Same reason why you get the "I'm gonna restore that someday" when you see cars in fields and barns I guess. I don't know the answer.

Well In my case I started a 32 ford truck ,But I really neede to know how to build a car from the ground up.So I bought a fiberglass 29 roadster ,Built the frame with dads coaching ,Not assisting other than knowledge.Right now Im fabbing up a convertible top .Just the irons,The 32 is next ,I was into muscle cars,Before this,Alot easier to build when suspension and frame is layed out already .........

I think it is a mental condition and there is a program about it on TLC called Hoarders....No really, I believe that for some people the project is much more rewarding than the finished product. That is why they will never finish them or sell them.

i have friends that are more into collecting or building than owning and driving. hell to a large degree i am more interested in building a car over driving it all over the country, but i believe all hot rods should be drag raced.

really hotrodding is different for everyone, for some people collect baseballs cards and some people play baseball

Same reason I own tools I'll likely never use....can't pass 'em up. Same with parts, and/or projects. If it's something that strikes my fancy, I grab it...then make plans...then the next thing comes along...ooooohhhh gotta get THAT for sure.

    sickness? sure....cure? Who cares?

Without you guys having so many unfinished projects, there wouldn't be as many great Estate sales to get great parts and other projects.

It is the circle of Life for the car guy.

    Keep it up!

I'm like a little dog peeing in the snow.... a little bit here and a little bit over there, and.....

Walking into the garage and seeing the car(s) can be a fix for some of us. It's not always about driving them, sometimes it can be nice to just look at it. It's like looking at any other sculpture or painting. If a person owns it and is satisfied with just looking at, that's OK. It's their money and they're using it as they wish. It's the same reason that you get to modify a car to suit your taste, rather than what some other group dictates you do with it.

my opinion is, its his to do with as he pleases... i have four project vehicles plus one driver project. and no, i would not sell any of them. i'm only 40 or so, and i have time.

to get pissed off at someone for not wanting to sell you something they own, in my opinion is kinda odd

well, fiddyfour....that's the beauty of the web....everyone can have his or her own opinion. not necessarily pissed off at them, just more pissed off at the general suckiness of the whole situation.

there are 3 reasons for me to think about selling a car. I need the money, I need the space, or some fool offers me more way more than it is worth.

what someone else thinks I should do with it has never entered the equation.

i like your way of thinking ratfink....it would be nice if I could be that fool. Don't misunderstand me here, I'm not the type of person that sees a car and suggests what someone should do with it. I pretty much don't give a crap what other people tell me I shold do, so I kind if look at it like a mutual respect.

Call my ass a HOARDER...If I had a barn and could go buy cars and trucks sitting that I thought I'd like to own....I'd do it....I can get enjoyment out of a car whether it is done or not but I also understand your stance...Try this one out, go by you a few and see if you want to sell one or the other...Don't be surprised if you answer...I'm going to start on that one when I finish this one....After all...There yours to do what you want to with them and when we die they just get passed along anyway!:D

Getting rid of them is admitting defeat.
As long as I still have it, it hasn't beaten me... we've fought to a draw.

X2....There are plenty of cars still out there

  22. Why not make friends with the guy and after he really gets to know you,,,ask the owner to help you out by selling you the project that he never will finish.
He might just have mercy on you and let it go for a good price.

    It pays to have friends!

  24. I'd wanted a shop and room to work for 40 years, life got in the way. Now that I have it, I've filled it with projects that I work on a little at a time. It's my therapy. I've had to sell better stuff over the years just to get by, not now. I've given projects to friends who I thought deserved a break. It's all about attitude to me.

I completely know what you mean charleyw. I'm 42 yrs old and will probably have to wait another 15-20 yrs before I get my shop or more than just half a project. i guess that's what i love about cars and the way that I was raised...it's all about attitude to me also. If someone is "telling me" how they think it should look or what I should do, I have a difficult time listening to them. On the other hand, I am HUGE on taking advice and learning from the others that are in my area and on the HAMB. Luckily, my father was a very hard headed stubborn truckdriving coal mining welder that drank PBR and smoked camels all of my life, so I have a pretty good head start on talking and dealing with the "get off my lawn" guys...as a matter of fact, I respect those kind of men more than I do the "yes sir" guys.

Obsession?...Slight Insanity?...a need to build/create?...I think all of us fall into this catagorie, if we really look at ourselves....it seems to me that I love to build and work out details...once that's done..I tend to lose interest...but I think there are others that, perhaps hoard..or maybe a better word is collect..and just never get around to working on their projects...the human condition... ??

I agree with Brad54, but also will add that there might be one item or problem the builder cannot resolve and is too stubborn, proud or dumb to ask for help to get the build moving forward again.

Gettig rid of a car ia a sign of defeat;starting another is an attempt to do better;sometime we win. It's a lot better than being a LOOSER who bellyaches because they don't have the fortitude or bucks to advance to the next level. I'll continue to hoard,it's my money and the WHINERS can whizz in their wheaties, not mine.

I am also suffering from that disease and have been for years.

Yes I could unload everything that I have that doesn't pertain to the current build on the 48 but what fun would that be.

I don't have a lot of real money in the boat tail roadster project at the moment

The 8BA powered Ford something (supposed to be an AV8) is probably going to be the last real project I do.

I'd sell the 51 Chev 1-1/2 ton that I have if anyone offered real cash for it or something I needed for one of the other projects. That one is for sale but there isn't a lot of market for big Chebby trucks that don't have engines in them.

Why aren't the projects moving along faster? Sometimes life gets in the way and family and other things take on more importance than getting the vehicle finished. Sometimes it is burnout after years of spending way too many hours working on a project and way too many weekends of going to car events and doing nothing else.

And you have to remember that for a lot of guys and a lot of guys on here those long term projects that never seem to get done have become part of the family and are still a big part of the guys dream and it is hard to give up on dreams until we give up completely.

I'm trying to cure myself of this by moving halfway across the country and limiting myself to 2 cars. Its sort of working. Until I come across something in my garage I just can't bare to part with.
