well picked up this 51 L112 alittle over a month ago and really started into it today. removed the front clip and just about have the m/t ready to come out. now it may be abit stupid but im replacing the the stock m/t with a chevy 250/th350, only for the reason of having abit more driver freindly. other plans it to rewire it, drop it abit, repair cab corners and other spots here and there and drive it for now and then see what other changes i will want to do later
I'm digging the NDTs Not sure what you'll gain swapping in a Chevy 250 in there versus the stock six. I'd change the rear end with something a little more highway friendly (like a 3.08) and call it good. Have fun with it
I get where your coming from, (and diggin the truck....not real common and I like that alot) However I agree with Phil to a certain extent. This is how I would approach it. If the original power train is functional, use it for now, swap in a friendlier rear/gear ratio and drive it while you build a killer 6 for it.... Just my take...
Based on all the IHC sixes I've owned, you don't generally -need- to buy parts except for basic tune-up stuff which is all available. Why not drive it a bit and see if you like it before you start tearing into it. Shawn
well its to late to go back now and what i didnt mention is the trans does not go into 1st or reverse, its not the linkage its in the trans, which could be why the truck was parked in the 1st place
well, 90 H.P. and double clutching is only fun for a little while, then it gets old. i did it for a year in my 50 110, then decided it was time for a change. i have quite a few hills where i live and the truck would only top out a 45 mph!! i actually gave the motor and trans. to a hamber for free. much happier with the small block and auto. i say go for it! do a search, there's a couple of threads dedicated to internationals if you need a little more inspiration!
My 48 65horse kb1 is getting a 9" out of a 71 mustang with 350 gears so I can at least get up to 55 mph on the hyway. A 350 will come later when I get all the parts gathered up for the change.
i got the old m/t out and the chevy sitting in between the rails. it does need to go back about 1-2" to clear the rad. going to the yard in the morning as i have a couple of vehicles i need to look at as far as motor mounts that mite work real well for this setup. will get pics after i get back from the yard tomorrow
Parts for the International six. Did you know they use those all over for industrial applications? MY brother has had great luck finding parts for his '54 R110. Great truck you will like it either way. Vintageride
I have never figured out why people assume that parts for anything that doesn't have a bowtie emblem or a blue oval on it, are "hard to find"...I've had exactly ZERO problems finding parts (new or used) for my '41 Plymouth pickup. PLUS, International has a lot of parts for these, as does NAPA, O'Reillys, etc. To each their own, but remember, YOU said why you were swapping powerplants and the pretty weak reason for doing so. That trans is fairly common, too. Enjoy.
Green Diamond, Black Diamond, Red Diamond. Some the medium duty engine names, FWIW. At 11 years old, my dad had me put a valve cover gasket in the Black Diamond engine in the 53 IH 1 1/2 ton truck we used on our farm. That was also the second truck for me to drive in the fields.
well the damage is done the chevy setup in in place. motor mount are tacked up and bolted in will be doing the trans mount tomorrow
Dang, I wish I had seen this earlier. The IH 266 V8 revved like the small block chev. It could have been pretty close in power to the SBC and with a good cam it will generate some respectable power. Schneider cams has a wide variety of cams for IH. You can back the 266 with either the IH 727 torq fight or the FMX style early IH auto. Both are very reliable and handle some good power. Chevy I guess is a reasonable choice since they are cheaper and more plentiful.
Yep, the old Chebbie-brainwashed argument was pretty weak in this case, it was a neat truck, now it's just not. I grew up with those things as my gramps was an IH dealer, those old sixes are pretty indestructible, and one helluva lot better engine than a Chebbie six- you hardly ever have to do anything to them except a set of points once in a while. And a 304, 345, or 392 V8 fit right in where a 266 will
Yep, I've got a 345 4bbl and 392 just waiting for an R series to come along. But instead of bashing the GM thing, I'll just say have fun with the truck.
X1000, It's getting a little lame to have a SBC bashing as the first evaluation of just about any situation that's posted on here. There's plenty of GOOD reasons for the SBC swap............the haters could just get over it but I doubt it will happen. Frank
I didn't mean anything negative by the IH mill comments. I was just sayin that the 266 V8 from IH is often over looked. (For IH stuff) The stroke is very similar in comparison to the SBC, thats all I was saying. I didn't expect anyone to jump in and start ripping on the guy for putting a chevy in. Its his truck let his choice be his and keep the bashing out of it. People ask for advice most of the time, not an ass chewing for not building it your way, thanks mom. Still a cool truck.
cool swap pugs, i like how you think out of the box and build your stuff the way you want. keep us posted dude!
i knew i would get razzed about the chevy thing, but hey i had str8 6 chevy's in a few trucks i had over the years and its tough to kill one and just plain reliable with just typical maintaince. once i have the mounts and such done im gonna try to hook up the trans using the stock column. i do want to lower it but prefer to keep the str8 axle at this point, gonna try to flip the main leaf and see how it works out. hell i looked at the frame and do have enough room to z the front section of the frame, but prefer not to cut it and just add a jag or some other type of bolt or weld on ifs. will see what other things i will do after i have it all bolted together wired and running enough to take it down the street.
started wiring it up, using a good used harness form a late 60's early 70's chevy truck. also changed out the the points dizzy for an HEI setup and got it to fire up but im off like a tooth on the timing. will get pics asap as my puter is acting up as usual.
Pugs, was that a BD240 six with the tilt valve head? If you still have it and would like to get rid of it, I would love to arrange to take it off your hands. Shipping might suck though.
it was a 220ci, its gone a kid i work with also works on the family farm and we made a deal on the motor for some tires i need for my s10, so it atleast didnt get scraped
havent posted in awhile. did do allitle work on the IH. pulled the front springs apart and reversed the main eye spring to drop it down some and thu some other wheels and tires on it. i also had the motor running somewhat, but couldnt get the timming right. wound up not having any compression on #1 so i pulled the valve cover and found that both valves were stuck open. was worried that there mite be other damage so i pulled the head and all else was good. took the head apart and cleaned valeves and everything up, lapped the valves back in and painted it up, just hard to believe no one around here has a head gasket for it otherwise i'd have it back together already.
nuttin a matter with a 250 good reliable engine,Parts store still has parts if something goes on the road.
thanx truckncoupe, im just building this on a limited budget as many of us are these days. with the right rear i should be able to pull 20+ MPG's or better. inlinr6, where did ya find that intake setup, that sure would look good on my truck, but then again no 20+ MPG's. i got more of the wiring mocked up this afternoon, should have everything in order and routed in a couple days.
made progress in the IH lately. engine is back together and had it fired up, still need to adjust the valves as i have then to tight now. also put on another carb i snagged at the yard along with a dakota seat mounted on stock IH adjusters with a pr of bed supports i had laying around to bring it up to a comfortable seating level. picked up a floor shift setup out of a jag and i changed out the shifter to a longer one i had gotten at the yard. will also be going with a dakota rear. its slowly coming along but watching the money till we get back from vacation. gonna be working on the trans line and cooler this week, get the shifter setup bolted in and cable hooked up, and what ever else i can do with what parts and pieces i have here. i also got a rad out of a dodge truck and have it mounted in.
Looking good! Getting ready to pull my KB cab and box next week and bolt them up to the new frame. Keep us posted on your progress! Sharp looking truck!
thanx bjs, are you mounting yours on a built frame or from another make? i got the shifter mounted up tonite, made a bracket that bolts to the trans, somewhat like the Locar shifter does.
