Tore out my p***enger side floor and bracing last night and stood at the side of the car staring blankly into it for a half hour. Ha. Wondering why I turture myself on all my free time by cutting myself up, getting filthy, getting burnt, and generally making a huge mess while spending my own money.
After months of torture and thousands of dollars, I might be able to fire up the old beast and go for a spin.

Wouldn"t seem right not to have all the nicks, scratches on the hands and arms.Got my share of knucklebuster wrenches.Tried the mechanic gloves but they just get in the way.

  6. I think that it is called masochism.

I have often wondered why I play with old cars and or old bikes. One winter I layed in and crawled around in the snow long enough to put an FE in my '54 F-100, and come down with double pnuemonia. My lame ***ed excuse was that I couldn't afford to replace the 6 volt battery and I had the FE and a good 12 volt battery.

It gets better I have pretty near all the pieces to ***emble my olds motor, but instead of ***embleing it I am in the process of polishing a caddy grill. Why on earth do I offer to do things for folks when I am burried in my own ****.

Let us know about the ride when it happens. You are making good use of your time off friend.

I've tried to put a Kabosh to side jobs. Last year I spent more time painting hoods, etc. than I had time for myself. And only charged half enough to cover materials for buddies. This year I have no buddies, ha.

It was funny, I worked all day Saturday to help a (car) buddy tear drywall out of his house for hours. As soon as I recovered enough, I was out welding a 49 fender to make it a 50. Last night, my back muscles were killing me after removing everything on the dash, s****ing all the old insulation off the inside of the roof, and cutting the p*** side floor out to the back pan. I remember thinking "what the hell am I doing?". I'm 40 now, you think I'd be able to afford nicer projects to start with.

...because it beats needlepoint and gardening.

  9. I spent a good part the last couple of weeks moving the raven to his new digs. Not kind to this old broken body for sure.

Getting older doesn't mean richer I am afraid, better start putting some away when you get back on the job. Social Security isn't security at all.

Nope, I never wonder why. I don't consider it torture. I'm happy every day I can work on one of the rods!

I ask myself that question every time. I think we torture ourselves because it feels so good after the job is done. I spent yesterday fixing a rotted brake line on my OT truck that required removal of the gas tank. I cursed every rusted bolt and fitting and every piece of debris that fell in my face and every gas and brake fluid leak running up my arms. I cursed every time I had to climb out from under the truck and get up off the floor. I cursed the aches and pains in my joints.

But I smiled when I drove it again and I slept very well last night. I think if everybody did this every weekend there'd be no market for all those prescription drugs for anxiety & depression.

Damn could have one cranked and running, now its sitting again untill I get money :D I luv the disease though

I don't think we can help ourselves. Last night, my friend called wanting to borrow my car dolley. Let me see if I can get this right. My friends daughters fiance's sister was travelling on I 20 when some idiot was trailing her, right on the bumper, NASCAR style, and as she tried to change lanes multiple times to get out of idiots way, the idiot just stayed on her ****. She moved numerous times from lane to lane but could not shake the guy. The idiot then bumped her in the rear in Earnhart fashion I guess, and sent her sideways across the median, where she stopped in the westbound (opposite) lane facing traffic. Lucky she wasn't hit. She drove back in the median and the car died. She got a tow to the closest body shop, 1.5 hours away from home, so she needed another tow back home, because her insurance won't pay but for one tow apparently. Thats where I come in. I am the friend with the car dolley. Of course fiance can't work a cresent wrench, so I help my friend bring the car home. This was after a day of removing a Mavrick top for for the coupe roof insert, then fitting it to the roof. I don't mind helping friends, especially in a case like this but I'm to old to work this hard. I torture myself, I guess, because I love it, AND, I want to drive the damn thing before I frickin die!

  18. I fell and had injury to my head ... still have not changed my overall car problem much... slowed things for a few months .. which made more internet and magazine reading possible which added more fuel to the fire ...have even eliminated some offshoot hobbies/collections ,,, focus ,focus

  19. I have to not even look at cars/projects for sale. My biggest problem is that even when I get a quick together project I find all those little things that would make it better.

yea it would handle better with the engine slid back a little or hook better with a locker instead of a posi or wouldn't it be way more cool with the olds instead of the running small block.

The only thing I call torture is trying to come up with the extra funds to buy all of the parts I want for a project......

Whenever my friends & family come over and see a project that I'm working on they always say, "Man that's alot of work & time". I always think to myself what do they do with their time? It's gotta be torture to sit on your *** & watch mindless television or to do nothing at all.

I always wonder that too. With all the time I spend producing something, what do other people do with all their time with nothing to show for it?

It beats golf! I spent sat before last going after 60 wagon on spindles, this past one in dallas at pate, sun burnt tired and yesterday back in wichita for a 56 wagon we drove home. This next wk end will be dewey show. Full blown disease with no cure. The cars are started to be like the mob finding a place to hide the (car)bodies.

I think that most of us who have been at it for a while have been through the "why the hell do I keep doing this" phase a time or two.

I just wish the ot stuff around here would leave me alone long enough to get some real work done on the 48.

This weekend it was the riding lawnmower that needed a transaxle (150.00 used from the lawnmower junkyard) after needing a pair of belts that cost 70 bucks for the pair. Then I found out that I am fresh mowed gr*** after I cut the way to tall gr***.

Today it is pull the rotors and check and pack the wheel bearings in the 71 GMC and then pull the trans out of the box with wheels that I bought a month ago to save gas money. Then clean up the garage if I get time.

But next Saturday is the Kennewick swap meet where I plan to haul a load of extra stuff to hopefully sell and maybe have some cash for some parts and pieces for the projects so I can thrash some more.

But for a lot of us who modify our rigs or build them from scratch it is the creative genes taking hold and working overtime. Instead of painting a picture, making a sculpture out of some material or other or carving a canoe out of a log we are out in the garage or driveway figuring out how to get that chop on the top just right or how to change the tail lights or french the headlights. Or it might be something as simple as building a bracket to mount something with a creative flair to it rather than being a piece of flat bar cut of in the chop saw with two holes drilled in it.
