What kinda cl*** could I run my injected 548" bbchevy on gas in?

 

That FED? AA/GL "Gas lakester".

 

If I took it out of the FED and ran it say in a tube frame 32 roadster... can I get into 200 mph club with its 950 hp on gas?

Dale's Birthday Post . . . As I hit the grand ole' age of 52!

Okay Guys: Really got into the FlatCAD and figuring out my porting methodology. Never ported one of these beasts - so one has to kind of figure it out as you go . . . to kind of learn what the damn thing is all about.

My wife decided to become a sponsor of the FlatCAD team - and bought me a professional Sonic Tester (is she one cool chick or what!). I've never used one for ports before, but it is cool as hell -- has small probes that fit right down in there. I did a bunch of calibration on it and tests on different areas of the block - seems to be accurate to about .010 to .020 . . . good enough for me.

Now, I must tell you, the sonic tester has made me a bit more "brave" than I would have been, but I'm still being conservative (as I just don't trust it enough as of yet). Also, I really need to get this done and not waste an excellent block . . . hopefully the 'Porting Gods' will be with me

I did a ton of measurements while I was porting . . . the thinnest areas are now about .125 or so -- which is about as thin as I'm going to go for now. It is more important to get this engine on the salt and LEARN a bit . . . than it is to get every last HP out of it. So, I'm being a bit conservative - or maybe the term is "Chicken ****"!

With that said, I believe I've done enough work on this intake to flow pretty well.

The FlatCAD's intake ports can be ported to a much bigger size than a Flathead Ford, and we can easily run a 1.94 valve. With that said, I believe the intake is "port constricted", not valve constricted. The area that I really decided to work on was the area where the port turns. The stock port is really choked down in this area -- big *** piece of guide boss and other **** in the way. Just a poor design for flow -- so let's "fix it"!

So - I let the cast iron fly . . . stopping to check progress with the sonic tester along the way.

Anyway - here is a stock FlatCAD intake port -- notice how constricted it is in the bottom area by the guide (where it makes the turn) . . . this to me is the most important area to work on:



Okay - here is a finished port - much better . . . actually pretty good except for the turn it has to make (like all flatheads).





Here is the top of the port - manifold side. I didn't go hog wild here, as I don't think it will make a damn bit of difference . . . it is much more important to work the bottom of the port and the turn area.





This port isn't actually done yet - have more work on the manifold side and once we put larger valves in it, will go back and blend the bowls once again - but I'm happy where it has come . . . though it takes a LOT of time to port this ****er (bigger job than I thought).

Do I know what the hell I'm doing on this strange *** block - nope - but we'll learn and hopefully make some decent horsepower along the way.

The only pisser about these engines is that there are really THREE different intake port designs . . . different lengths, different angles, I'm sure different flow potential. So - one has to kind of re-learn on every port, taking a lot of sonic test measurements along the way. Will be interesting to see how they compare on casting thickness. Makes it all the more difficult - ******** FlatCAD Medusa ***** that she is

I don't have a flow bench and/or infinite time . . . we'll let the BLOWER solve the majority of our "port problems" - I'm just helping out a bit!

Thanks to everyone for the birthday well wishes . . . means a lot to me

Sometimes the younger folks give me all kinds of **** like "I can't believe you're 52!" . . . or "What's it feel like getting older and having another birthday - yuck, yuck, yuck . . .".

I tell them . . . "Getting older beats the **** out of the alternative . . . ". Some don't quite get what that means -- hopefully they live long enough to figure it out

 

This is the best build I've read about since I started reading the little books in 1954. A guy a little older than me then had a LaSalle coupe with a flat Cad in High School. I tried to buy it for years, no luck. I love building engines. Not of this caliber but mine run great and hold up just fine. I wish I was closer to any of you volunteers so I could lend a helping hand. The spirit behind this project is heart warming to say the least. I just had cataract surgery today and read the entire post with one eye. It was truly enjoyable. And Dale, nothing has been boring or tedious in what you write. I went through the DoAll school of surface grinding and "FELT' every p*** you made. I would love to be at B'Ville with all of you guys and will consider it if my next eye operation ( a little more complicated) goes well which I have no doubts about. Meanwhile I will follow the project, pray to the Hot Rod Gods, Salt Flat Gods, Luck Gods, and Budddy's wife that all goes well. What an inspiring story. I truly hope that the volunteers keep stepping up and maybe one of them will offer financial help
