fuel tank help on my A.(making it out of something)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by model A hooligan, May 3, 2011.

  1. okay heres the deal fellas, i cut my cowl tank down to pull the firewall in, welded it up,sealed it with red-kote, and well it still leaks.

i figure i dont want to spend all the time to re do it so i would like to make something, besides i would like to run guages anyways.

i have a rumble seat, but i have a 6 inch rear kickup, and also exhausted my build funds so i need to make it on the cheap and quick,

iv seen harbor freight sale those 8 gallon air tanks but they are a bit to 'fat' to put behind my seat and still have leg room for the rumble seat.

i have seen the smaller tanks for the wimpy air compressors and they have 2 tanks, i need something the same size, any ideas of small tanks i can buy at a store and not have to ship?

I fabricated a gas tank for my friend that had a '30 coupe with rumble seat, we kept the WIDTH of tank to a minimum measurement (6"), ran the full LENGTH of rumble area, & made the up & down part low enough to just close the deck lid, with tank filler neck & vented cap in place.
Also welded in a 1/2" fitting opposite end of filler neck to run a "Turnover" tube vented to under ch***is in case of accident. This arrangement worked out fine.
We used 16 ga. hot roll sheet with formed pieces to minimize mig welding & warpage, this is the time to weld on your tank mounting brackets also.-----Don

  3. i dont have that much room for the tank. i know exactly what you are talking about tho, mine would only be 3 inches in the space were i think you are talking about, i want to mount it were your legs would be arched but im looking for a skinny round tank to make it out of, im not comfortable with welding a sheet metal tank now after mine had failed.

Try O/a or tig welding the gas tank, if you mig'd it before, there are usually stress cracks in mig welds that really make it a poor weld for this kind of thing

You might try looking at air tanks on big trucks, if you have a salvage place close by. I've seen long thin ones, as well as short fat ones.

  6. a long thi one is exactly what i need, i just dont seem to know were to find somethign like it.

    i bought a pipe today 5 o.d by 2 1/2 long, i dont think its big enough.

under 3 gallons would be way to small for anything other than drag racing

here's an online calculator for figuring gallons by size
    http://www.greertank.com/tankcalc.htm

sounds like your going backwards though, less than 10 gallons for a street car is going to be really limiting and if you can't afford $100 for a fuel cell should be thinking do you really want to skimp by on the gastank for your car...

also I've made motorcycles tanks that leaked like crazy before the por 15 tank sealer was poured in, my buddies w***el looked like a cross between a walnut and a flute before the por 15 and it holds up fine, daily driver on a rigid bike, so maybe just fix your tank?

did you remove the tank before sealing it so you could move the sealer around good?

  8. i didnt say it was 3 gallons, the pipe is 6 inch o.d by 2 and a half feet long. looks like it would be about 8 gallons. i have no room for a large tank. the rear kickup limits me.

and i had wrote that my originaly tank is sealed with sealer and it still leaks. i will never use por 15 after it ruined my vintage go-kart carb and tank. i used'redkote' i guess i have a hole somewere thats to big to seal. pluss as i had said i would eventualy like to run gauges in the car wich means cutting into the stock tank.

Using the calculator posted above, and guesing 1/4 wall pipe, your "pipe tank" would hold 3 gallons.... I believe that was why HE mentioned 3 gallons

you said 5" diameter, even at 6" your under 4 gallons when you take into consideration the inside diameter

an 8 gallon fuel cell would fit inbetween the rumble seat and stock seat frame with room for 2 people's legs still and cost $100 brand new, complete with cap, pick-up and roll over vent. a round tank takes up more room than a square tank of equal capacity

making parts is cool, short changing your build isn't

  12. Cheapest thing is re-weld your leaking A tank.
I'd do it for a bottle of tequila.

I bought a 17 gal from rod parts $145.00 shipped. Do you really need a rumble seat?

if only you lived near me, i have a source of large aluminum air tanks from big trucks.

  15. yeah i kinda didnt realize it at first

  16. you are a idiot. stay off my threads. your just mad casue i didnt buy your steerign box and you acted like an ***. what you just posted has nothing to do with my thread. go on about your life and leave me alone. i got a whole complete working box for less than what you wanted for just a shell and then said it was already cheap...get overyourself

  17. your right on your capacity, but are you talking about behind the rear spring? if so theres no room there since my rumble lid swing inside the car, it swings in a little further than a stock one would since i made all of mine by hand so its not exactly henry specs

My 31 is channeled 4-1/2" and the rear frame is zeed 7".....I have room for a 10" diameter tank 31" long and a battery in front of the rear crossmember....
My question is why on earth you want a rumble seat...? is any one ever going to ride back there...? and whre does the lawn chair go..?

  19. yes i would have room for a fuel tank if i did away with the rumble seat, you asked why i want a rumble seat,...well why not? my car is not channeld and slammed so i think it would be kinda neat. and its a cool idea to be able to have more than one person with me.

Why not keep an eye open for a stock tank that doesn't leak? Then you can still have your rumble seat. If you decide to run gauges later on then you can look into a different tank. Might as well use that space that the tank is already taking up.

I've got a tank underneath up against the bed on my 31 pickup. Worked out great. Do some measuring underneath & see what you come up with.

  22. cause my engine is in the way:) its the reason i cut my stock tank and shortend it, i do understand the reason folks are asking why keep the rumble seat, but thats just to easy!. no but honestly i think its cool and the car would be more enjoyable

  23. see tho on a pickup you wont notice it as much, i was thinking about it, and there would be a way to mount it under the back of the car if i could find one that wasnt to deep or however...another words i dont want it to hang down. i was going to measure in the morning

KEEP THE RUMBLE SEAT ! Figure it out Homie

  25. everyone is telling me not to tho!!! i think ill try to find a low profile tank and hide it under the back,it shouldnt look to bad if it doesnt hang to low under the body, i would like to keep the rumble seat area.

there is a guy selling a metal square fuel cell for 20 bucks here i may get it just so i can drive the coupe since my daily driver keeps breaking clutch cables

I used a sand rail gas tank on my roadster. It's mounted behind the seat as high as I could get it. Here is a link to a few gas tanks that are in the range of the size that I used: http://www.eliminator1racing.com/category.sc?categoryId=58 These seem pretty cheap. The only down side is that it puts the tank in the lap of anyone in the rumble seat. But, I guess it's no different than using a stock tank and having it in your lap. I hope you get it figured out. My daughters love the rumble seat in my coupe.

i'm talking on the floor in the middle where your feet go if your sitting in the rumble seat, in my car I have my battery box there

i kept the rumble seat, it made alot more work to keep it but that doesn't bother me, I also use the stock gastank with a stock gauge cluster that holds a speedometer, fuel, water and oil pressure. it's not like you can't have gauges with a stock tank

almost anything is possible, just don't short change your build with excuses or laziness you'll regret it later, been there done that....

  28. elmitcheristo-that was also in my head that style of tank behind the drivers bench, would have just enough room for feet in the back. i just havnt found a tank i like yet, and yes those are pretty cheap,

seventhirteen-there would be room there but my cars floor steps up in(well steps) so theres only a very small shelf there,i know what your talking about,i was trying to shuv a long rounded tank there so its basicly under your knees.

i know what you mean on short changing things, i actualy never wanted the stock tank to work but i had it so i wanted to keep from buying a different tank but oh well, it has been alot more difficult keeping room for the rumble seat.

  29. just found a round (8x30) polly tank like in the link above, in town for 70 bucks. i dont like the plastic but i may just pick it up today to get my car on the road,i dont realy see another place to put the tank since the stock one is not repairable.

looks like i may be able to sqeeze the tank in the back under your knees in the rumble seat area, just before the floor kicks up.
