Stone, although I am not the go to guy on all things dealing with modified eliminator it was the next great thing to come along for me when the gasser wars died down a bit (in my opinion) in the late sixties. Modified production and modified eliminator were pretty much the ticket for me. Although I spent much less time at the drag strips in the seventies (newly married etc) I had a good friend that I had run with earlier with a 69 Z28 during the late 60s, and during the 70s he changed to running modified production and eliminator. If he told me they were having a pretty good meet I always tired to make it and they never failed to impress. The show and antics the cars put on were great with the dry hops etc in the staging lanes. The burnouts today I believe pale in comparison although safety concerns may have put an end to the modified antics in pre-staging.

There were a lot of Corvettes and Camaros. Larry Kopp was one of the big name Vettes I suppose, although there were a bunch of them. I believe Mike Edwards got his start in modified eliminator. There were some Fords but I seem to remember mostly small block Chevy related cars. My friends car was a 292, I believe with a Doug Nash 5 speed. He had teething problems as he was on a limited budget but ran pretty strong (in the tens). I believe he ran aftermarket 4 bolt main caps and heavily reworked iron heads. He also played hell with clutches which kept him from going too much over 10,000 rpms although some of the other guys were rumored to be coming out over 11,000 rpms. Pure music. I have read that some other guys ran 277 and 288 cubic inch motors, and other such small inch sizes. Some may have been larger-I am not sure as I was pretty much a limited informed spectator during that era.

I only wish some of the nostalgia guys would go in this direction rather than going big on cubic inch. You can keep the ET and speeds reasonable and they certainly were a whole bunch of fun to watch.-Jim

I'm glad we are remembering Astoria Chas. What would have been had he not lost his life in Vietnam. I found this article from the Daily News after his death. I'll post article in 2 parts.

Here are my last 2. I sold the 62 because it was unmolested and I hated the powerglide tranny and wouldn't modify a low mile car. I replaced it with this "late model" (hope I don't get in the mods mad for me posting it). I've been trying to get paint on it now for 3 years or recently try to sell it, whichever comes first. Matching # 327/350 with a pounding cam through the side exhaust and 4 speed make it a blast to drive when I have time.

Great looking cars, I wonder what is the biggest rear size wheel and tire combination you can fit in the rear without them sticking out so far past the rear quarter panel and not have to mini tub them
