    Bucksnort,nice picture. If we only knew these types of push cars would be today's 401k's. I wish I still had my 56 Chevy pictured here in the background at Orange County.

    My brother and I built this car out of a wrecked '64 Plymouth we bought at Arrow Wreckers in Kingston N.Y., for $75.00. It has all of the Black Arrow's running gear in it, except you'll note the "Ramchargers Racing Engines" on the front fender. We pushed a rod out of the Stiles motor the Arrow ran, mechanic's error, not a motor problem, and Jon Lundberg, the "Voice of Drag Racing", who I cannot express how much respect I have for, was kind enough to make a call to Ramchargers and got us a replacement engine very quickly. The AMC to the left is an SC/Rambler owned by the AMC dealer I worked for at the time, Kelly Motors in Vails Gate, N.Y.
    The 990 clone would consistantly run over the national MPH record, but wouldn't et well; it was on the same slicks Doc Burgess put on the car in 1966![​IMG]

    here's two from Lions, around '65, '66......I have had these negatives ever since but forgot about them. I had them printed last week for the first time.
    Both from the fire-up lane, but they are going backwards. They usually laways did the fire-up on the fire-up road, not on the strip.
    Years earlier all th fireups were done on the strip, but when they added the FU lane, the push cars and dragsters would stack up in order at the far end of the FU lane, then pushoff towards to stating line, so this came as a surprise to me when i found these negs...

    So,you are saying that they are coming off the FU road and heading down the strip from the top end like in previous years?
    That would be a little surprising.
    I know(I think) Lions was in an industrial/port area.Have not seen many top end shots.Looks pretty industrial in the background.

    I recall those buildings in the background were Apartment buildings and thus Lions had a 10:45 "noise curfew," which was violated quite a few times.

    These are great pictures. I remember the fire-up road and was on it a few times but never thought to take a picture. Thanks Mazooma1 for posting.

    I don't know if I worded it right.
    When I started going to Lions, there was no fire-up road. So, the dragsters were pushed from the starting line down the track, turned around by hand and then were fired-up up being pushed towards the starting line (north), then they would have to be pushed around to face the starting line (south).
    It took up much time, so they built the fire-up road.

    Now, most of the time the push cars/dragsters would be pushed clock-wise and onto the fire-up road at half-track were they would wait their turn to be fired-up on the specially built fire-up road.
    But these photos show them being pushed counter-clock-wise.
    Same deal, just in reverse from my recollection.

    I have tons of 8mm movies that I shot between 11-16 years old (1961-1966) of the cars being pushed into, waiting, and then fired-up on the FU lane, but I don't know how to edit them and put 'em on YouTube....but I will someday soon....

    Did you keep the BA body after taking out drivetrain?That the BA nose?

    The original Black Arrow car was quite butchered, as most were, as everyone rushed to get in on match race money. We set the car back in our barn until a local kid came and wanted to buy it, which he did, for $50.00. It sat in his backyard until his mom got tired of looking at it, and they took it to Consolodated Metal in Newburgh, N.Y., where it was crushed and put on a boat to Japan or China. It's now probably part of my wife's Scion xB!
    The tin on the Storm King car (actually the third Storm King) was a mix of tin, as we'd already sold the original Black Arrow acid dipped stuff to other people, bacause when we bought the car it was running fiberglass parts. We bought the lightweight stuff on SK3 from Jerry Stien (Teacher's Pet) from N.J.
