OK, I just got a flywheel and torus for an early (55-59) Hydramatic. The guy I got it from swears he unbolted it right off the back of a 265 Chevy V8. This is the second one I got like this. But it will not bolt up to any Chevy small block crank I have. It has a smaller center hole and the bolt pattern diameter for mounting it is smaller also. It has 6 bolt holes and 3 dowel pin holes. Any one know if there ever was a small block v8 with a different pattern? Or what's up with this?

The early Chevys used PowerGlides. The Hydramatics were behind Caddys, Olds and Pontiacs.

Chevys used the hydro too I have one

  6. Normally got used in a truck and the early 283 crank flange is different than your later flanges. If you are using a post 327 crank/post rope seal crank the flex plate/flywheel will need to be modified.

Will look into this matter tonight, as I have a swap book that shows the whole truck kit for the hydro to cheby. Three dowels? The flywheel has two dowels to mate up to torus cover. You have some dimensions, like crank flange opening diameter? Does your flywheel have 18 bolt holes around the outside perimeter? Perhaps the guy you bought the items from had the hydro bolted to a GMC 270 and misquoted 265!

Also see if there is the O-ring groove in the flywheel.

    More information would certainly help.

Powerglides, Turboglides. A really fine alternative, NOT! Anyone for a Dynaflow?

It has the 18 bolts for the cover, plus the 2 dowel pins. It is 14" in diameter, 168 teeth, and has the o-ring seal. It's definitely an early dual range hydramatic flywheel. And by the previous post it has to be for a 6 cyl. or maybe the early 283. I will measure the center pilot tonight. If I can not find one, I am seiously thinking on remachining this.
