Not sure what year John Burkholder went to Cali but it was before 1968. John worked for his uncle at Horstman Mfg. making motorcycle products before starting B & B performance. Tom McCrea reminded me that Jeff Kane ran the east coast B & B.
I was thinking that John was still in DE until around 1970, but I found the entry listing for his 'G/S '69 Z-28 at the 1970 US Nationals under Horstman. One thing I do remember is that he must have been short on space in his tow vehicle because he had to carry his spare 50# flywheel under the back seat.
Just a little like all that North Carolina beach sand laying on the floor in the back of Bobby Warren's cars? LOL!!!! Anyone ever try to unload one of those Jr Stocker spare tires that were filled with tractor tire fluid? Can you say, " HERNIA"!!! LOL!
The concealed in plain sight ballast was as much fun as the concealed. Always interesting to hear those stories. I was always coming up with ways to meet the weight in MP but I think the Jr Stock guys were the best.
Bobby Warren came to Suffolk with a Camaro sporting a bumper hitch. The car was unlettered and I thought it was a local driving his street car until I saw his ET. The tech guys must not have paid much attention to the hitch until they realized it was Bobby's car. One of the told him to remove his "Disguised ballast".
Not sure if this is a stocker but I think the odds are that it is.Can't see any class designation.Anyhoo,it's a cool pic.
That's a car from my area, Grand Rapids, Mi. Mi plate on the trailer and G.R. on the rear quarter. Row Olds/Row Ranch was an Olds dealer in GR many years ago. I remember the car from US131 but I don't know whose it was. The year of the tow vehicle and the color of the plate makes it about 1970.
That's the "hot" pits at Atco. The '39 Chevy in front of the Vette is the Reinford Bros gasser, The Moose. I grew up in a neighborhood not far from the track at Atco. My Dad would ride my friend and I to the track, starting in 1962. I was 12 years old. By the time we were 13 or 14, we knew how to get in for free.....we'd walk into the woods next to the fence bordering the stock pits. At about 50 yards into the woods, someone had dug a ditch under the fence, we'd slide under and we were in. A few years later, we were racers, running our street cars. The track was in the blood. I lived in that neighborhood from 1959 until 1999. I got so I could sit in my house and pretty much tell what classes were running just by the sound of the cars going down the track. And now, I kind of miss hearing the fast cars off in the distance, going thru the gears during the summer weekends.
The Moose tow car was called the Moose Doctor back then...... Over the years they have raced a number of cars and they were usually yellow. Last I recall they ran a Corvette in S/G.... The Atco pits were mostly sandy dirt......and there is still a big area of that same dirt/sand. Anytime I have to pit on the dirt/sand I hate it..... I was there twice for NHRA races last year.....Once on pavement, once on dirt...
The Blue 65 Dodge belongs to Phillip Marvetz of Washington State, it runs A/SA with a nascar 4bbl Hemi.
Looks like Maple Grove PA to me. On second look I am not sure , The return road is in the right place but I am not sure about that building.
This morning I took a 70 motorcycle ride to look at a potential Jr Stocker at a salvage yard in Delaware. It was advertised as a "restorable" 1956 Chevy Sedan Delivery. Also in the ad was a 1964 Chevy II 4 dr. wagon less engine & trans. What I found there brought tears to my eyes, '56 Nomad, Pontiac Safari, several Bel Air hard tops, '63 Biscayne and others............all rusted to pieces!!!
Island does not have a return road on that side and never did. Maple Grove did and still does.......I would bet it is Maple Grove. I was there for the first time around 1967 and there was not much there building-wise....Larry Lombardo was from a town right near Maple Grove and I think he is still there....A very good S/C racer has "Lombardo Racing Engines" on his scoop.
Yep, they sure did; logo too. The REO Speed Wagon was a motor truck manufactured by REO Motor Car Company. It was an ancestor of the pickup truck. REO are the initials of the companys founder, Ransom E. Olds, also the founder of the Oldsmobile. Pete
