so true,..he was portrayed in the first movie that made teenage rebelion so cool as kinda a dork, but this pic makes him so cool,,,,

  2. Great pic!!! This should be required viewing for all the wannabe-'50s rockabillies and their tatted gal-pals. Look closely - they did NOT look then, like you do now!

..in the movie, the merc had no front plate...so that means, Sal probably didnt sneak away in the merc while filming...

  6. That is one of the coolest pix ever! Unfortunately, I was only 1 year old when that pic was taken.:( My dad ran the Chevron station just "down the street" there at Pico and Sepulveda at about that time. Used to tell me stories of all the stars that used to come in with their cool cars. No paparazzi or security teams then... A much better time...

I actually own the 55 Triumph TR5 that was used as a parts bike to restore the Dean bike. And Rebel was filmed in 1954.

The "uniform of the day" in the late 50's to early 60's depended on your status in the community. If you were the upper you wore button down shirts and pegger pants (kinda Ivy League), crew cut or parted hair. If you were the lower it was engineer boots, Levis and white T shirt, waterfall and duck tail hair cuts. Those in between were not so uniform.
DIG magazine helped spread the look to teenagers across the nation.

Back in the day? For me it still is, even though I wasn't born until 1964 (and I am wearing stone chinos and suede playboys at the moment). For me this era is the epitome of cool, and always will be. Fashions change in a cycle, but at the end of the day the late 50s and early 60s are always returned to, as that's where cool began, whether it be cars, clothes, music, home furnishing etc etc. There is a place in my head called Finksville where it never got past 1963, and when I have to venture out of it into this shit box called the modern world I can't wait to get back there.

Thank you so much for posting this incredibly cool photograph. Doug (Mazooma) I'm going to try and take your enlargement and use it as desktop wallpaper, I think through our previous conversations you know how much I find like this means to me. I like to think that I have always "carried the torch" for this magnificent era, and am proud to report that amongst the over tattooed facially pierced rockabilly crowd that gets it so wrong, there are still youngsters out there that get it right. I have attached a picture of my son Danny (second left) a couple of years ago at 16 ready for a night on the town with his friends/band.
    Thanks again
    Paul

    Edit;-Sal is wearing cuffed jeans!!!

Just a general observation on those times vs. ours ............there's not an overweight person in the whole crowd.

Kind of wild seeing Sal Mineo topic. Just ran across a napkin with his autograph from years back. I think my parents got it while in Florida or something.

I was just going to say that I saw that on tv a few months ago.

And yeah it was tragic how he was murdered.

Anyhow, awesome photo and thanks a lot for sharing it.

  28. Hi, yes thanks me, Mike Gilmore in the picture with Sal. It was taken in a gas station on Sepulveda Blvd in W.L.A.. It was a great club and we had a really good time always. I was initiated in the club in Jan.1956 on the corner of Hollywood and Vine with a bunch of other guys. That is another story. My Mom threw the Magazine that had the the pictures in it, away while I was in the Navy. Any info on a copy as well as hearing from some of the guys would be great. We had our last reunion a few years ago. I still fly my plaque on my '32 Phaeton street rod. Those were the good times!! Love this site ! keep it up. Mike

I had a girlfriend, in the early 60s, that said I looked like Sal Mineo.
Have a few of his 45 rpm records. Wasn't know for his singing though.
