In Texas you have to have a commercial license even to haul your own can in your car hauler i believe--its SCREWED because of the f-d up law on getting a ticket if you have a commercial license--they wiil shut you down.

WTF? Seriously? I might be hauling a car into Texas this summer, and I have no such license, am I at risk even if it's legal where I'm coming from?

I've seen a few of these done like this, but why does nobody ever lower the rear fenders level with the fronts? They look so cobbled together with them at different heights, especially if the front fenders get bobbed for ground clearance.

I heard something about this,,,,, If you don't have a class A you'll need to have a health card on you from your state. An old 'H.P.' guy walks his dog by my place and he told me there trying to pass a law that stats anyone pulling a trailer of any sort will need a card soon.:(
    I'm not get'n it,,,,,,,,,,

You have to follow the laws of the state you're in. In other words, limo tint is legal in Nevada, but illegal in Utah. Nevada residents driving Nevada licensed cars to Utah would get a ticket for too dark of windows! It's total BS but that's how it works.

So if I am hauling a car into Texas from Alberta Canada I would get pulled over? And we don't have front plates here, I know they won't pull you over for that (once they realize you are not from there anyhow)

Started years ago, and the man passed away, an got it from his widow. 48 Ford, extended 28 in. cab, 500 in. Cad, FWD, lots of good work, needs some TLC.
I was running out of projects anyway.LOL

    From the Texas Drivers Handbook:

You must have a CDL to operate:
    1. A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds.

    2. A trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross combination weight rating is more than 26,000 pounds.

    3. A vehicle designed to transport more than 15 persons including the driver.

    4. Any size vehicle which requires hazardous materials placards.

Persons operating the following vehicles are exempt from a
    Commercial Driver License:

    1. A vehicle that is controlled and operated by a farmer;and used to transport agricultural products, farm machinery,or farm supplies to or from a farm; and not used in the operations of a common or contract motor carrier; and used within 150 air miles of the person’s farm.

    2. A fire-fighting or emergency vehicle necessary to the preservation of life or property or the execution of emergency governmental functions, whether operated by an employee of a political subdivision or by a volunteer fire
fighter (this includes operators of industrial emergency vehicles)

    3. A military vehicle, when operated for military purposes by military personnel, members of the Reserves and National Guard on active duty, including personnel on full-time National Guard duty, personnel on part-time
training, and National Guard military technicians.

    4. A recreational vehicle that is driven for personal use.

What's the definition of a recreational vehicle?

    Basically, yes. Realistically, no.

The law often reaches as far as the the patrolman's ego who pulled you over. Some would write you a ticket for no front plate regardless if you weren't issued one. They'll enforce the local law and count on you and the courts to work out the details. Most bank on the fact that most out of towners will pay the fine and not challenge it.

This doesn't apply to all cops, of course, some are decent and reasonable. Some are just out to prove something.

    Thanks bigdav160 and daddio211, I appreciate it!

I was kinda figuring on that, and I know the ego maniac cops too well, I got a speeding ticket when I wasn't speeding in Michigan once, the cop even said that I had to pay it or else I could not get back across the border... that was the first time I saw a credit card scanner thingy (the technical name) on someones belt to pay the fine on the spot... they don't have that sort of thing up here.

I like that cab and the rear fenders, very nice! Have you tried hauling any cars with it yet? I'd love to know how it handled... I have a 16 foot car trailer that has served me very well since I had it custom built in 98, but I have always wanted to graft a Toronado/Cadillac front frame and FWD to it and drop a COE on it, but I have wondered how it would be to drive empty and loaded...

    ----------------------
If you are going to, or passing through
Texas or any other state or province you
have nothing to worry about - so long as
you have the proper class of drivers license
from your home state or province for the size,
weight and type of vehicle - which also must
be registered in your home state or province
    - that you are driving. The one bizarre thing
in all of this, is that while all states and provinces
either require a special CDL or as in the case of
Ontario, a class A or a class D endorsement on
your regular drivers license, plus an air-brake
endorsement if the vehicle is so equipped, to
operate a heavy truck or heavy truck and
trailer combination, is that motorhomes, RV's
and camper-type vehicles, regardless of their size
or weight are exempt from any special drivers
licensing requirements! This applies to all states
and provinces and your 82-year-old grandmother,
who's never driven anything bigger than her Smart
car. or gone further than to the supermarket in it,
could legally get in and drive a 50 ft-long, 500 hp,
40,000-plus lb. class 1 MCI motorhome conversion -
with a trailer on the back even(!), on a cross-country
trip on any road or highway in North America - with
nothing more than a valid drivers license for her
    car!!:eek::eek:

A vehicle with RV plates on it. And that is regulated by the states issuing the plates. Also know this - If you are doing business with your RV, like selling vehicles or parts or towing for hire, you still need the appropriate CDL just like it's a Commercial vehicle. Racers used the RV dodge for years, the cops are on to it. Just having a box of T-shirts in the vehicle can get you busted as commercial.

    Very cool!

Would you mind taking some photos of the Weaver badge on the side of this one for me? I have a Weaver and I am very interested in the different badges they have.

Ryan your Fargo has some real possibilities as a wrecker. Had to Photoshop this one too. It would be cool if you set this one up, don't think it would take much. Oh yeah, I chopped some of your trees down too. :D

That looks really cool Eli, I really like the Kelsy-Hayes wheels on it (I run the same ones on my bus) Thanks a lot! :D

A car guy buddy asked me to build this for him as his first hot rod, wild because he is a hard-core restorer, but he fell in love with my 36 GMC tow truck and wants one too, as do several of my neighbours too now! LOL, I like where I live!

  29. Hi Everyone;

I've been reading everyone's comments on this forum and thought I would post a couple pics of the beast I have been looking at. Please give me some honest feedback. Is this to far gone? It's a 51 Dodge B series, clean****le, fairly solid except for the obvious rust holes in it. The doors close easy and straight. She is a mess, but can I get some feedback. I have a 93 Dodge 1 ton 4x4 with a****mins diesel I would want to drop this on. Help Please ?
