I added 3 more gallons because of evaporation and I'm gonna let it set for a few more days.

Then I'm gonna take the wheel to the carwash and see if high pressure spray will knock most of it off...wire brushing is too much like work, and you guys know how I feel about work.

Boy, this thread has been "swerving like ervin" um,.. i like the vinegar reports, getting the same results out of a small project i've been doing. i really like the GASSER the sunroof, hitch and full heater point to a street-freek" type car. i love it just as it it is!! some kinda cool panel paint action. i guess it depends on the history of the car to restore it or not.

Im writing the Science Channel so they can put it on How Its Made...also sending in pics of the wheels,,,vinegars most popular wide spread(traditional) use!

Vinegar should be pretty cheap away from the grocery store.

Check around your area for a wholesale of bulk style grocery store. vinegar should be much more than a buck 50 a gallon. Some wholesale places have it in 5 gal pails for less

When yer done strain it and make your own MAYONAISE..............

Also for a bit quicker result, you can get phosporic acid (used for etching and cleaning concrete) from builders supply houses. It is more expensive than vinegar but its a stronger solution so it works a bit faster.

Vinegar is nothing more than acetic acid usually in a 5 % solution but if you look around at commercial suppliers it can be found in 10%, which makes it about as effective as phosphoric.

Muriatic acid is also out ther but it needs to be used out doors and with bubber golves and such.

for big items like wheel and heads and such electrolysis is probably the most effective method.

ALL of the types of acid do the same thing, they react with the Fe3O4 (Iron Oxide), the Hydrogen+ ions in the acid (all acid is defined by excess H+ in solution) react with the Fe3O4, making water H2O and leaving Fe+ ions in solution. So as you use the solution to dissolve rust, the vinegar or whatever acid solution gets weaker as it does it's job. Excess OH- (Hydroxide) is what makes a solution a base, opposite of an acid.

Phosphoric acid is nice as it leaves an iron phosphate coating on the surface which is good for paint adhesion.

Muriatic acid, otherwise known as swimming pool acid, is dliuted nitric acid and is probably cheaper than vinegar, just dilute the muriatic before use to about 25% strength. Any acid processing obviously be careful and wear eye protection, weak acid solution can be washed off your skin.

Good progress reports Larry, just give it time. It will work.

Next time try oxalic acid AKA wood bleach, works great and wont harm the paint.

Even works on steering boxs,*******s rearend with oven off then grab that 2500 PSI Bad Boy!!Love my pressure washer!

I'm a big fan of the pressure washer too, but I've been using basic engine degreasing stuff, letting it work in for a while, then blast it real good. Works a treat on grubby engine blocks or gearboxes!

The phosphoric acid was awesome (must look at a construction store, I used to get it at the DIY stores but hasn't been available for years now), reasonably quick and the iron phosphate on the surface was really useful for containing further rust from appearing overnight, and was a nice key for paint. Some of the parts I felt most proud of were prepped like this, works great especially on odd-shaped parts.

I've also been wanting to try the caustic soda process, must make that experiment one day.

When i was a kid i would climb up on the counter and go in the cupboard get the vinigar and drink it right out of the bottle. My mother eventually locked it up. No wonder i have indigestion problems!

Hey 3wLarry, be interesting to see how it turns out. You may be interested to check this out - rust removal with molasses. Apparently light rust disappears completely & heavy rust gets converted back to metal!!!! There's a guy over here who has built a tank big enough to fit a whole car in. just google up molasses rust removal, there's also vid's on the subject.
    good Luck

Hell, if it doesn't work, you have the start of a Boat Load of Pickles, just add Cucumbers.

I use molasses . It take weeks , or monthes .... But it s safe .
And always fun to have the parts de rusting in a tank the whole winter for quite no cost instead of stored on a shelve in the garage ..

I used to clean stuff with phosphoric acid, cleaned up really good and quick, and left the surface phosphated, so with a good clean it was ready to paint. Awesome stuff![/QUOTE]

Phosphoric acid is used to passivate steel, like alodine to aluminum. It burns the surface and seals the metal from rusting again... like using high heat to sear a nice steak. FYI

Wally World usually has a good supply of distilled vinegar, 2:16 gallon.......you should have seen how they looked at me and the wife when we had two carts filled with 20 gallons....LOL. By the way my experiment was on a 35 gallon fuel tank for a M-F 60 Tractor......cleaned it up well.

  23. Warm it up (a fish tank heater works a treat as per an experiment a mate of mine did). It will fasten up the process considerably.

Man that vinegar seems to really work!
Love the Ford gasser too! The scoop and sunroof are easy fixes, and funny thing is I had to remove the same scoop and sunroof from my car! Took awhile to get the roof opening patch panel welded in, but you can't tell it was ever there now!

I like your new project for obvious reasons. I'm hoping to get mine running this week. Fire in the hole always stirs the juices. I'm making this one into a Mainline with no options. A stealth street racer and not a real gasser.

Um ... The last time I had the misfortune to catch a glimpse of a cat's**** I was reminded of just how unattractive looking they are.

    Well, to me, anyway.

Main thing is to NOT let the fumes get to you . Makes you see things that are not there.
