That is one great looking truck!! We are going to start the restoration on my '59 next month. Because of the gas prices now, I am thinking of pulling the 292 with the tow truck 4 speed, and replacing them with a 3.8 Ford V-6 and a C-4. Has anyone tried that in an old Ford F-100?
Where in upstate New York? I used to live in Candor, and raced a Ford Street Stock at Shangri-La Speedway, in Owego in the mid seventies.

My experience with the v6 is bad. I would try higher gears in the rear axle instead. If you really want a big change. Get rid of the 4speed and adapt a 5 speed, with a gear change. Probably won't cost much more than a conversion to a v6 either.

I'd be dropp'n a mustang gt 4.6/ 5 gear into it. MPG are not that bad if you manage the load pedal. Plus you have power when needed.

Thanks guys, you gave me some things to think about. Brie

  7. Here's mine.. It's my daily driver.. It only gets 9 mpg.. and I don't care :D
I wanna lower the rear a little more and put some normal size tires on the front, then put a higher gearset in the rear.. 410 gears and a C6 don't work well on I-5. Also need to fix the wipers now.. Anyone got a good wiper motor laying around?

I have a neighbor that has a complete 302/C4 sitting under a tarp in his barn. It's been there for 23 years since the mustang was rear ended at a traffic light in El Paso by a drunk with no license and no insurance. It is not rusted but hasn't been run since he pulled it out of the Mustang. I can have it for a hunderd, so I grabbed it. I've heard that it is tough to put that combination in a '59 F-100 though, the Mustang was a 1970. Will that swap go, or do the cross members get in the way? Brie

Brie---Most likely I was in the stands at ShangraLa as I rarely missed a week in the early to mid 70's. I am in Elmira. Those were the good days for local short track racing. If you ever get back this way, let me know. I would be happy to bring the 59 out and listen to some good racing stories from the past! Post some pics of your 59. My 59 originally came from Texas and I bought it in Lockport, NY not too far from the Lancaster Speedway. lc

I had a black 1966 Galaxie with a 390 in it. John, the service Manager at the Ford dealer just east of the track did a three angle valve job on it for me.
Did you ever go into the A&W Root Beer between the track and the Ford dealers? I used to stop there on the way into the track and get two one gallon milk jugs filled with Root Beer. It was cool on race night, all of the cars on trailers and transporters lined up at the drive through window. Brie

I didn't KNOW they made a crew cab in 1959. It sure looks solid, what engine are you putting into it? Brie

I think it is a 60. Tim is building it. He's going stock appearance, but low with his usual notch in the rear and a gm clip up front. Should look pretty cool.

    It's a 292 three on the tree.
pretty solid truck. Painted in a variety of spots with flat black, yellow and red, then burned thru...then cleared. Interior will be red and white tuck and roll.

  24. I finally have something to add... Just got this today. My new wrench therapy.

Has a sort of gasser stance, mostly because the engine is in the bed!

1960 Custom Cab Short Bed 292 4 speed.

Anyone in the soCal desert area got a y block?

  25. My dad had a 59 F100 back in the early 60's to about 1971. It had the inline six with three on the tree. We fondly called it the big yellow bomb because for one it was this pale yellow color with white grille and bumpers. I have to see if I can find photos of it somewhere and post them.

Hey all, i'm new to the site. Just gotta say, NICE TRUCKS!!

I was looking for a new project, so my buddy found me a '59 longbed with a 351w for $400. But after see'ing all these shortbeds im a little hesitant to get a longbed. Any nice longbeds out there? Or any chopped longbeds?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Ed

I have a chopped long bed. It was pretty easy to do. Hardest part was finding a decent shortbed on the East Coast. You can do a search I have a thread on here about it....PS make sure you do an intro in the intro section

  28. Long beds look great nice and low, chopped???? might seem a little squashed any photos

  30. Here is my Ford-powered Ford, a 1959 F100 I just bought this past weekend out of the Dallas area. Runs and drives great! Nova sub, late '60s 302 Ford with 350 hp, C6 auto with Gennie shifter, Ford 9" w/3.70 gears. ps, pdb, heater, and gauges. That's it!
