Saw this photo on the Internet and wonder if anyone can fill me in on what kind of engine this is .....

I can't make out what it says on the tags on the engine. It's in this truck and the photo was taken at a car show in McPherson, KS .....

Deutz Air cooled diesel. They are in a lot of tractors and as stand alone engines. Deutz is a German company, they still make tractors. Mostly 4x4s. The farm I work on has three of them. Well built but I would hardly consider the engine to be traditional in any way shape or form.

Deutz, Pretty neat engine Idk for a hot rod though.

  16. I've seen them used on stationary equipment as power plants in one form or another. They're also commonly found on concrete pumps running the hydraulic pump. Louder than shit even with a muffler. I've even seen six cylinder turbo charged versions.

  17. It's German too. Don't forget that.

Der Motor ist ein deutz 5 Zylinder Luftgekühlten Diesel. Häufig in Traktoren und andere industrielle Anwendungen. Es ist vor allem aus Gusseisen, und ist eine schwere verdammt Mutter.

no water jackets to muffle any thing. Thin valve covers. You just cant get away from the noise when your stuck next to one.

Torque! It might not be fast but it is unique. I've worked on many Deutz engines. They started building water cooled engines about 15 years ago to meet emission and noise standards. The newer ones are a pain in the ass. They have individual injector pumps for each cylinder that need to be shimmed.

just rereading this, and noticed the actual car in the original question. What do you want to bet that the owner will describe his car as "old skool" to anyone inquisitive passerby? What a total POS....how can people's taste be so bad?

  30. I can tell you that "Prolly" certainly isn't a word.
