Back to the discussion about the fire-up road at Lions...I ran across this photo today...this is the direction that I recall as being the one used most often...

Man, if this isn't picture perfect to best illustrate the mid-60's at lions...
Boys and girls..THIS was the moment in time that was when drag racing was at it's pinnacle....
never to return, never to be duplicated....

  4. Great shot of the Burnett-Malland-McKenzie twin with Dave McKenzie no doubt at the wheel. Was featured on the last pages of the very first issue (#1) Popular Hot Rodding magazine back in early 1962.

  5. Popular Hot Rodding, Vol. 1 No. 1, June 1962. I was fortunate enough to have my RPU as one of the feature cars in that issue. :)

  6. Dean, that first issue has my Coleman car featured with the Scotty Fenn article. Bet most don't know this but that issue also contained not one single ad within its covers.

Ughhh...wrong again. Well, right era, correct region. So I get a C as a passing grade

  10. As someone else mentioned not many of us remember what was being taught in school but if you bring up the time when a classmate mentioned he heard Hayden Proffitt in his Cone Chevrolet sponsored '62 broke into the 11's without a 50 foot running start we remember that occasion. Speaking of 50-100 foot running starts, they were a small added feature at the "beach" not only done by the stockers but T/F as well. Zoomies and Frank Cannon vieing for the 200 mark.

  11. Let's get this show back on the road

The way the driver of that wagon is holding his arm out the window speaks volumes.

Sad news. So to comemorate one of the winningest teams of the 60s, some pictures I stole off random sites.

The blue and purple Austin in the upper left corner was once the Herrera and Sons car from 1967. Dan Brougguire (spl) bought it and dubbed it the Impossible Dream, wherein it ran A/Gas. Car was destroyed in roll over at 76 or 77 Winternationals. The family still owns an operating diary in Montebello, the same home town for Herrera and his brew. The Brougguire Diary makes the best chocolate milk.

The rear engined modified fuel roadster bares a resemblence to a Monogram model car kit that surfaced in the early 70's. I suspect that maybe it served as the inspiration; I will look for the kit.

Nice and clean lookin' Corvette... Makes me think of master engine builder Tony Feil's 1959 Corvette... I think it's a Modified Production car that he's been seen with at some of the northeastern nostalgia drag races (like E'Town's Nostalgia Summernationals, etc)... The old 'Vettes possess a certain brand of "compact charm" that's always appealed to me-- And yeah, when they're pullin' the front wheels in the air that's the proverbial icing on the cake... Keep those pics comin'... "The Doc" (Celebrity Drag Racing Authority & Visionary)...

P.S. Here's a YouTube featuring some of Drag Racing Underground's choice old school drag racin' stuff... Hope you enjoy...

Well, there are a several pre-1970's cars featured in the video clip that I thought folks would get a kick out of seeing here... Like Brian Kohlmann's '65 Dodge S/FX car, Bruce "USA-1" Larson's 1968 Camaro F/C (immaculately period-correctly restored down to every single nut 'n' bolt), Beswick's "Tameless Tiger" Pontiac, Jerry Stein's classic 60's "Teacher's Pet" Stocker, and "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' old "Swamp Rat IV" front engine digger... I apologize for the '70's rides... And nobody has to buy anything-- They're welcome to just enjoy the freebie clip... I'm glad you liked the footage, capturing these old school drag strip beauties "in motion" is a service we love doin' for the racers who put so much blood, sweat and tears into running these cars, and we're glad that the fans who love 'em also get some enjoyment from it... Hope folks enjoy it, that's all... Thanks... "The Doc" (Celebrity Drag Racing Authority & Visionary)...

Wow! Great shot...Picture perfect in capturing everything that was the 60's!....oh, the wonderful days of my youth spent at Irwindale....I miss that strip almost as much as Lions.
I still can't not look when I drive by the Miller Brewery that stands there today...I guess I'll always look...just a reaction that takes me back to when aches and pains were for the old guys.....I never thought I'd live long enough to be one of them...

Diana, great video and I think it is appropriate. Here is a picture from 1966 showing Larry Reyes in the Kingfish Cuda, Ronnie Runyan's Blue Hell Vette, Hubert Platt and Doug Thorley's Chevy 2 and Dickie Harrell.

Do you not agree that there is some resemblance? Thanks for posting the link to the Monogram kit.<!-- / message -->

Starting to go through some old car magazines that have been boxed up for years. Lots of cool stuff in there. I'll get a scanner before posting anymore, but this one was on top of the stack.
