LowCat, a great series of photos, man! From Post 25,806 on, GREAT stuff, bringing
history (and some weird stuff!) back alive!:D:cool:

Harry Truman is best remembered for ending WWII, but there was a lot more to him
than that. He was a real car nut and a lifelong campaigner for road and highway
improvement, going all the way back to the township level as a young man. Though
construction of the interstate highway system started in Eisenhower's administration,
the ball got rolling under Harry Truman!;) Not surprisingly, he is often pictured behind
the wheel of a car (his first was a Stafford:cool:, made in Topeka). He said that, apart from
reading and music, his favorite relaxation was DRIVING. A HAMBer at heart?:D:cool:

Made by the Budd company. They were in use into the 80's and there are probably still some operating somewhere

Okay, LowCat, this one's a wee bit on the weird side. "1949 fly-in
drive-in"??? Do you (or other HAMBers out) know some back-
ground on this? I'm guessing California? Maybe Texas, the one-
time U.S. drive-in-theater KING with over 600? Are these, maybe,
from a LIFE magazine feature article? Kinda looks like their style.

Dual duty as a fly-in restaurant, apparently. Even car-hop
service without leaving the cabin! ("Mind rolling your window
up a tad, so I can hang the tray on it? Thanks! Fly in again!":D)

Sheesh, mom even gets the film cans by air service? This
theater/eatery/airport must have been "out there," eh?

I know I'm old-fashioned, but I still love the glass brick, so popular
after WWII! :p

Runways, taxiways, hangars ... theater! This complex was really
something different! But, WHERE was it?:eek::confused:

I was going to guess Texas, but then I found this:

"An interesting innovation was the combination drive-in and fly-in theater. On June 3, 1948, Edward Brown, Junior opened the first theater for cars and small planes. Ed Brown's Drive-In and Fly-In of Asbury Park, New Jersey had the capacity for 500 cars and 25 airplanes. An airfield was placed next to the drive-in and planes would taxi to the last row of the theater. When the movies were over, Brown provided a tow for the planes to be brought back to the airfield.
The drive-in theater movie experience cannot be beat."

Something to think about. In 1948, that '10
Stanley would have just been 38 years old.
To put that in better perspective, that would
be like someone driving a 1973-model-year
car now, which somehow wouldn't seem
strange to me at all! That makes me think
I'm getting really ancient, because I have
a hard time thinking of a 1973 model car
as even being particularly "old", let alone
as something desirable or collectible or
even novel!:eek::eek::D

Hmmm?? That sounds like it could
be dangerous! Maybe somebody with
dial-up should try it.....and then maybe
a year or two from now, post and tell
us how it went! (or how it's going!!) :D

Unfortunately due to the sheer size of this thread repeated photos is inevitable, and to properly quote or add to the story regarding a photo, it often has to be reposted or nobody has any idea the context of what is being written.

So bear with it, it's worth it in the end. (took me 2 months to get through this thread at 600 or so pages IIRC)

There isn't a single photo on this thread that I wouldn't want to see twice or a dozen times. Just enjoy and understand that this is the history you lived or never got to live.
