Valvoline's New Oil

Anybody seen the ads for thier "new' Green oil. 50% reclaimed oil. WTF. The last reclaimed oil I've seen was in the late 50s when it was sold in 1 gallon cans. I can't believe the crap being promoted in the name of saving the planet.

 

I laughed out loud when I saw the commercial last night. We used to call it "re-run" oil when I was a kid, and used ot for lawn-mowers. While I can't speak to its quality, it is, however, pure marketing genius.

Oil companies have been using reclaimed oil blends for decades. Ever notice how dark a new qt of oil is? I started noticing it in the late 70s. Where did we think used oil went? How many quick-lube places are there? Where do those thousands of gallons of used oil go every week? "Film at 11:00"

 

So - Soylent Green really is people?

 

What comes around gets rerefined.

 

You need to learn about oils a bit. And listen to the Highlander. Some good threads on here with info from actual petroleum engineers.

 

i like how its the same price as the other oils. we have had it at the parts store i work at for about 2 months now and not sold a single qt of it

 

I remember when I was kid I had this old Jeep Station wagon 2dr 6cyl. and it had a 3 inch crome tip on it.This thing burnt oil so bad that when I let it idle it would blow smoke rings which I also was doing with cigarets at the same time.I used to buy reclaimed oil at the imperial station for 15 cents a quart for it. Now those were the days!!!!!!

when i recycled my old oil, it's a gooey conglomeration of 10/40, 20/50, 5/30 and red, metalflake, trans fluid. i got rid of it because it was of no use to me. why on earth would i buy it back?

 

At the very least if it is used oil they should charge a used price. Back when I had a diesel truck I used to run drain oil instead of diesel fuel.

 

You're making it sound like they just take used oil, run it through a screen and resell it...

Breaking in the oil in the towing rig on the way to the track then useing it in the race car is about as close as I ever came to recycling oil.

 

The guy who used to pick the used oil from the forklifts and trucks at the juice plant I used to work at sold it to someone who supplied bunker fuel for ships. But yes I can see where oil companies would be redoing it and selling it again.

 

I thought some of the circle burners did it the other way around Ran the fresh oil in the race car and then put what they drained out of the race car in the tow rig or daily driver.

i've been told that Valvoline conventional oil (the stuff in the white bottles) has had a small percentage of recycled oil in it for many years, just not well known

we have had the NextGen (green bottle)in our store for about a month , it has not been a big seller. it's about the same price , most customers just laugh at it as they walk by to get the white bottles

 

I worked at a service station about 50 years ago and we carried reprocessed oil. It was packaged in glass jars with metal funnels that screwed on the top. We sold about as much of that as canned oil. There were a lot of "oil burners" back then. It was only 10-15 cents a quart but we kept the containers. I guess my boss was buying it in 5 gal buckets and pouring it in the jars.

I used to see those jars at swap meets when they stopped selling reprocessed oil. I guess what goes around comes around.

 

I've been an auto tech for the Post Office for nearly 30years...They've been using re-refined motor oil for at least 15 years in our shop.

 

It smells like burnt shit!

 

Snohomish County Sheriff's patrol cars have a bumper sticker, "We use re-cycled oil". I personally think they also "re-cycle" bad cops from other cities/towns/counties/states, so why not oil? Butch/56sedandelivery.

 

has anyone else noticed if it is green its the same price or more recycled stuff is the same way the only thing we all use every day that is recycled it sh!t paper

 

We used to sell 30W bulk oil in the glass qt bottles for $.25 and sunoco 190 for $.17 a Gal.
I put alot of bulk oil through a $35.00 '55 chevy I drove to school.

Your worst batch of drained oil from your car is a better base to start with than crude oil, if it is truly re-refined.

 

If they can recycle pee into drinking water on the space shuttle, what makes you think they can't clean up motor oil, replace the additives (the only part that wears out) and resell it?
Now I'm not claiming I'd ever drink the water on the space shuttle, or use the recycled oil, but I'm just sayin'
