well again, i need the help of the vast vault of knowledge that defines the H.A.M.B. , i'm installing a new converter in my 350/350 31 tudor. the problem and question is, the bolts out of the old converter are to short, and they are grade 8 and fine thread, i have some grade 8 that are longer but not fine thread, and my local ace does not carry the ones i need , do i need fine thread, again, thanks guys.....BT
Are you sure the convertor bolts aren't metric? Only reason I ask is because the convertor I bought from Summit uses metric bolts.
I think you better stick with whatever thread size the converter is (which could be metric). I also think that a fine threaded bolt is stronger than a coarse threaded bolt; there is less metal removed from the bolt when the threads are cut and because the threads are closer together so you get more surface area to grip. When this stuff is engineered they use specific hardware for a reason, I would use the same type hardware that was removed. If you need a longer bolt try a different hardware store. Good luck.
gotta drive a ways to a napa, the converter and flywheel are not threaded, i have to use a nut and bolt....thanks
3/8x24x1/2 grade 8 should work with nylock nuts. <table border="1" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" width="530"><tbody><tr bgcolor="#CCCCCC"><tr bgcolor="#CCCCCC"><td>Torque converter Bolts, GM TH350 & Powerglide, 3/8"-24 x 1/2" (3 Pcs. w/Ny-Lock Nuts)</td></tr></tr></tbody></table> Here is a link to the Pioneer brand flexplate, flywheel and torque converter bolt selection that is a good reference. http://www.rpmmachine.com/pioneer-flexplate-flywheel-bolt-kits.shtml
I have a brand new in the package set I will give them to you for free. If you have a few days, just tell me you'll send me back the actual mail cost and PM me your address, if I can help you out, TR, { just goes to show, you cant believe all the stuff 3WLarry says about me }
I just looked on the map, I wanted to take a ride tommorow in the hot rod and I would bring them to you, your darn near Tallahassee? Is that right? Autozone has the Mr. gasket ones if I remember right, the correct ones too.
Bolts are NOT metric, might have been paint or powdercoat in the holes and they gave you the impression of not being SAE. I had to send back a Summit house brand 10" converter, the bolt holes were repaired. They were welded closed very poorly mind you, and redrilled. One bolt would not line up with the flexplate what so ever, the other was drilled at a 37 degree angle to perpendicular. The weld's looked like someones first attempt at stick welding while under the influence. What a mess. Summit did take it back, no questions asked, it was just a extreme let down and hassle. Without bashing Summit, the house converters are obviously another company's blem's and repairs.
i appreciat the offer, but i already snagged some at napa, yea we're about 65 miles south of tally, thanks , drop by any time...BT
Thanks CM, we will get together one day and have a few cold ones, but I wont take the 26, lets see at 8 MPG, from south Fla. to south of Tally, there goes the retirement $$$$$ $$$$ $$$$
Go to Lowes! They are 7/16 grade 8s fine thread, (I think they are the same as teh engine mount through bolt and nut?) and they are very short. You can find themand they are 80 cents each. I got them there cause some guy in a speedshop wanted 20 dollars, and I said go blow. They have a threadable bolt chart on teh wall (Lowes). Home Depot has nothing! I know this sounds weird, but I dragged my damn converter for my 700r4 in there in shopping cart and sat there till I found them. They have them! I wasn't gonna pay 20-30 bucks for three bolt when myflexplate was 25 off slea-bay. Pork
