yea, but 7000 rpm burnouts are the best! Actually the distributor i was running had the advance all screwd up so it was advancing WAY past where i should have and pinged itself to death.
Wow, 13 pages on how good a 327 is. Let me add that the SBC (in general) has one of the best designed engine oiling systems for it's time.
I love mine. Only have about 1500 miles on it so far including a 500+ mile trip last weekend from pa-md for the cruise. It is the first motor I built(with help from a good friend). I ended up using alot of used parts to put it together. I had a set of high dome 11:1 pistons. Bored 30 over. And the guy that did my machine work hooked me up with a set of some 205 angle plug bowtie heads. So it screams. When I had the block all apart I basically"ported" all of the coolant and oil passages that I could and I'm pretty sure that made it the coolest running sbc that has been through our shop. Barely goes over 180* sitting in traffic on a 90* day. I could go on and on. Basically I just love the 327. Most of your other engine options are so mainstream. The 327 is clearly a conversation piece!!!(as this thread has proved).
Here's mine. A box stock 350 horse 327. It's a blast to run up thru the gears. This is another one Chevy got right. IMHO anyway.
They could have done better with it.. Like install a "real" high rise intake manifold and a Holley 600, 625, or a 650 carb instead of the smaller 575-585?? cfm Holley...
One of my all time faves, have had two very hard running and dependable 327's. Just says old school goodness to me. You can't go wrong with this mill. Good Luck ~sololobo~
Not all are created equal... some have .120 dome pistons.. some have flat top pistons.. Some have the good heads with 2.02 intakes.. some have smaller valves. A set of double hump heads go for a premium these days due to us "old guys" still being fond of them. I have two sets here, one set is 1969 202s w/accessory holes.. (premo) (help me out here) Small journal 327.. about 1964-1968?? various horspower from 300-365hp.. the 365 is not very streetable.. Don't put it in anything your wife will drive. The 300 is pretty mild, thou it sounds good. Large Journal 327, 68-70ish.. they have a larger crankshaft journal, same bore, same stroke. You can swap a large journal Crankshaft into a 350 block.. as someone did for a balanced trw rotating assembly here into a 4 bolt main block.. (they never made a 4 bolt main 327) NEW VORTEC so called 327.1988-??? 5.4??. actually a 326.. does not share same bore and stroke as old engine.. I have one of these here too..A fun motor, comes up quick, gets good mpg, has "almost enough horsepower"... Has a real decent tuned port injection system and vortec heads.. Shared some knowledge now HERES a question from a grey bearded guy?? Can I pull the vortec heads, intake, runners, computer and "fabricate" the sensors mounts on my 1965 small journal 327 with steel crank and flat top pistons??? anyone know what the compression ratio will be?? I remember the old ones being nearly "blow proof".. I had one in a camaro that ran 8 grand down the interstate for a half hour.. Northern auto parts has a kit to rering the 65 327 for $113.. Not as cheap as the "basic" 350 kit that is slightly more for pistons, freeze plugs and all.. But it'll do.. Ya'll left out a "fun" engine Chevy made for the Z28.. a 302.. a 4" bore, 283 crankshaft, normally installed in a light car with a 4.11 gear.. they would scream.. come up quick and had enough rumpiedity rump to run.. If you find a old 283 the bores are thicker and you can bore them to 4 inches.. No matter what size chevy you build? if it has a distributor? the best is a HEI.. don't try to mess with points... ONE wire hook up.. Speedway has HEI distributors for fords, chryslers and flat heads..
I agree on some of the stuff you mentioned, but why bother spending money on boring out a 283 .125" (1/8") when there's still plenty of "beefy" small journal 327 blocks to be found??? It kinda makes sense don't it to use a 327 block with the 283 crank???
The word nostalgia and Quadrajet just dont go together. If you want nostalgia stick a carter AFB or rochester 4GC. just my opinion-
