Trying to keep a general theme or time period, have one more in this set of the Hi Domes S.F. car Club, but It's hiding.. locals may recognize the Great Highway and parking lots out at the beach...

SR71 in a series of boxes

 

It's an A-12, forerunner to the SR-71, being transported to Groom Lake in approx. 1963.
Groom Lake is now known as Area 51.

 

For us dummies,what is a SR-71? Or A-12?

There is one of each in the airpark here near the Lockheed Skunkworks. The docent there has an interesting story about how LBJ had every plan, model, design study, etc. for these planes destroyed because he was promoting General Dynamics. The result is that if they wanted to build another one today, they would have to start with zero plans.
Occasionally, we have seen one flying which is pretty cool. They were doing "updates" a few years ago to a couple of the planes and would test fly them.

 

Spyplanes. I'm not familiar with the A12 but the SR71A Blackbird is a piece of techno amazement. I visited the Air Force Museum (Wright-Pat AFB) shortly after theirs arrived, they'd just rolled it into the museum while we were there. Awesome aircraft.

 

You say the Lockheed Skunk Works, the must be the Lockheed-Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale Yes...

Sorry for the modern photo of my friends plane... but when it is zoomed you can read the Canadair designation by the cockpit...

He bought it from Canada... and I know he loves the RR engine but it needs altitude to be efficient and these jet aircraft are classified as "Experimental" and limited to 10,000 ft Ceiling and the damn thing will suck the money from your wallet faster than a Politician!

Raymond Loewy would probably have been proud. Thanks for posting these, LowCat.
I don't think I've ever seen a Continental kit that almost looks as stock as if Loewy had
actually designed the Stude coupe that way!

A friend of mine saw them pulling out the first SR-71 in the dirt patch, the next day I was there taking photos.
Will post a couple.

Sure would be nice to have one in Burbank.
