Hot Rods Bare Metal American Graffiti Clone

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fuel10922, May 19, 2011.

  1. Just got my new issue of Hot Rod Deluxe and saw a couple of pictures of a bare metal American Graffiti clone. Does anyone have any other pics of this clone or info?

Saw it here at the Portland Roadster show in March. Don't know anything about it really, but seems to be making the show circuit.

  3. Maybe I will get lucky and see it at one of the shows on the east coast.

    I like it naked!

  6. Naked Milner, makes me cringe just to think about it. I wasn't too impressed with him with his cloths on.

When is someone going to clone the PHAROS merc? I'm not sure i want to see any of them naked either. :D

Wow and built right there in Corn town. How wooda thought that anything but fire trucks would have been built in Corn town.

I am probably mistaken but for some reason I thought that the Milner Coupe had molded fenders. Damn it now I have to go dig the movie out.

That'd be my coupe. We were originally headed to Sacramento to be part of Axle's Suede Palace. We got invited to park next to the actual Graffiti Coupe. That's where Hot Rod Deluxe got the photos. Kind of the culmination of a long (6 year +) project. Trying to build an accurate tribute took a shitload of research. We'll paint it one of these days but before we do we thought a few people might like to see what the Milner Coupe is made of. Most of it will sort of disappear when it's painted yellow and black.

We tried to keep The Naked Milner as period correct as possible although that proved to be a challenge with a couple of the more obscure, yet important parts.

I gotta tell you it's way cool to see a thread about your car on the HAMB that you didn't start yourself. Thanks for the interest. Here's a couple photos taken by Ron Kimball. You can read about the build on the blog in the signature.

I should mention that the HAMB's own Freddy Williams built the badass power plant.

    Gibbs works great.

Thanks 133, we call it a tribute but replica is a compliment for sure.

    So cool nice job...Rod.

  21. It's great looking. So... what are the "couple of the more obscure, yet important parts?"

Did you custom make the headers?

Also curious about the ladder bars. Did you copy those and how did you find out what was under there?

Thanks. The make-up of the original AG Coupe includes parts from 30s, 40s, 50s Ford; 30s, 50s, 70s Chevy; 50s Cadillac, 60s Pontiac; 60s Corvair; aftermarket Ansen, PSI, SW, Man-A-Fre, Hurst, Cal Custom; and maybe the weirdest, an aftermarket piece by AMCO for a 70s Alfa Romeo Duetto.

The headers we made, each side with slightly different flanges and collectors, just like the Coupe.

The ladder/traction bars are shop made with PSI brackets. Finding out what was under the car took several plane tickets, long arms and a Hi-Res, articulating lens digital camera, the patience of Job to wait for Paul LeMat and owner Rick Figari to go to lunch, gallons of Jim Beam, and five years of staring at the photos to figure out what the hell we were looking at. There were four of us hard core builders around the country arguing, fighting, egay sniping and ultimately collaborating to complete the research.

For any more detail than that, you'll have to get the book?

  25. There's a book? Sounds like an awesome project and experience. When you mentioned a couple of hard to find parts. I thought it would be cool to hear what those were. Thanks for the teasers. For instance - what was the aftermaket Alfa piece? Beautiful job and nice build. :D

  26. Man that is a nice job! Love it.

Teasers? Teasers?! Yeah okay I guess I'm not as sly as I thought I was. We're trying to put the whole experience on paper. But I'll tell ya, it's a whole lot easier to say you're writing a book than to actually do it. There's so many, whatdya call those things... words! Anyways, we're trying.

Now don't tell anyone, but the rear nerf bar on the Coupe is an unaltered front brush guard for the Duetto.

Saw it at the Portland Swap Meet, and couldn't take my eyes off of it. This baby is so BALLS ON correct that I'm sure there were a lot more accuracies that I didn't even notice. 'Bout the only thing missin' are the brackets on the frame for the camera platforms. But I woulda' left them off too. Must of been tough finding the Man-o-Free intake manifold.
