Just saw it on the news also. I built so many models of the b-17 when I was a kid, my mom wouldn't let me buy anymore.

Damn! What a shame. That's the accepted risk of flying the old warbirds, though.

No injuries is the most important thing. It is sad that the airplane was lost, but better to end that way than being s****ped or turned into a static display.

Local news is saying an engine fire. Pilot landed in a soy bean field a few miles West of my place. Everyone got out OK. Except for maybe the engines the plane is a total.

I heard that an onboard fire started in the plane shortly after takeoff, and they had to ditch it in a field. Thankfully the 7 people on board all survived.

The B17 took off from Aurora Municiple and was apparently smoking shortly after take off (according to the news here). The field in Oswego is a few miles SW of the airport.

I hate the media...they made it sound like it crashed, when it was nothing more than an engine fire after takeoff. The pilot did a great job of LANDING the aircraft safely...then everyone walked away from the plane...then it continued to burn.

I saw that plane a couple of years ago. Had a chance to go on a flight. Now wish I would have done it. :( That's a terrible loss. Not too many left.

Very sad but... In the words of Mr. Young,
It's better to burn out, than it is to rust...

Damn! There are only a handful of B-17's in flying condition, maybe 13 or so...the real sad part is the countless hours spent on restoration...at least no human casualties

  22. Very sad. I hope they salvage the remains for a museum. At least the Ol' Girl had a long life.

She was a much loved aircraft, and the press IS stupid...crashed indeed - Dumb***es. My late father-in-law flew Forts in WWII. Amazing aircraft that could sustain a lot of damage and still get them boys home. Legendary photos and film from that era tell the story.

Most of the undamaged parts will be salvaged to keep others in flying trim. Sort of like being an organ donor I 'spose.

  24. I live in the area and was working not to far from where it went down. We watched it fly over and my wife called me 15 minutes later saying it was burning in a field by her dads house. What a sad event.

A sad day for B17 fans, a grand day for the families of the crew who survived the fiery landing. Always love to watch them fire those big radials up and taxi off for those graceful take-offs.

  26. That's very sad. Not many flying B-17s left. The really sadder news is that there are so few of the original crews left in America anymore. We get to do today because of what they did then.

God give comfort to the crew that cared for her and the guys that were flying her on this last flight. Some people would try and tell them it's only a machine but we know better. This is a huge loss and while everyone is physically ok from the sounds of it, a loss like this is never an easy one......
