Hey Guys, Check this out----For grins and chuckles, compare the two pics of my W31; first on page #90 of this thread (taken at Capital in 1969) and then page #490 (taken this past Saturday at Cecil County). Same car, same Aztec Gold paint (mostly original paint w/ new lettering). Who would've thought the "Junior Stock" thread would be alive and kickin' and almost to page #500!!!!!GREAT JOB!!!!!Don't forget---York in July.
Thanks for the input on the headers. Lets see if I can put together a list. * Hooker Headers * Heddman Headers * Belanger Headers * Cyclone Headers * Kustom Headers * Jardine Headers * JR Headers (used by the Centolanza brothers on their 67' R/O Hemi) * S & S Headers * Stahl Headers * Doug Thorley * Horsepower Engineering I know there are more.... Paul
Did just that. These cars are truly time machines. Awesome car/history! 105 on window - then and now Eddie
Yes, Sound by Miles was just a muffler & tailpipe shop nearby that supplied the "hung-on" exhaust for the car. Back then it could have cost all of $50. to do it, so I've often wondered why he got the publicity on the car???? Verne
Hello If anyone is interrested the Holley Hot Rod reuion will be live starting thurday on www.bangshift.com this week end. HAVE A GOOD DAY
Gebler Headers,,,,,,,,,,not in the Top 10 list... Mr. Colesy always comes through with the technical stuff. Great article on exhaust flow. Early 70's 'cheapie headers' * Appliance Headers * Cragar Headers pc

This short film just made my whole week. Listen to that wonderful FE! "Nowadays a turbo Subaru would blow this thing into the weeds but it wouldn't sound right doing it." Amen brother, amen.
Speaking of headers...of all people, THRUSH decided to get into the game...for a very short time. Bob Beazer, the Canadian "Mohawk Indian" who did the starting-line anti-raindance at the Indy Nationals, bought out the remnants from THRUSH when they ended their "experiment". Other obscure or "focused" companies would have included the likes of EMPI (VW-Porsche) and BRE (Datsun), Clifford 6=8...
I'm surprised an East Coast guy wouldn't mention Tubular Automotive, Weymouth ,Mass ......... Woodland/ Andresen, Bob Gaudreau etc
The sound AND the look. Unless that turbocharged rice burner can run in the 11's, my money is on the Ford. With a good tune-up, drag slicks, etc. that 427 8V Galaxie XL should have no problems running in the low 12's. Pete
Without going through the trouble of looking through my old issues of Car Craft (circa 1969), etc. I seem to recall that JC Penney A/FX brand headers, drag slicks plus other speed parts were available from that company. Also to that list you can add Mickey Thompson "super scavenger" headers and the el cheapo (and leaky) Blackjack headers. Pete
I know Appliance headers had a square 4 bolt reducer for the exhaust hook up. Did the Blackjack headers have the same thing?
Nope, just your standard 3" reducers with tri-flange. I did see those 4-bolt reducers on a set of headers on a friend's car once upon a time long ago....I found that odd...didn't know they were Appliance headers. Pete
I used the J.C. Penny A/FX slicks (7 inch ) and M/T headers (early non scavenger type) on my 65 Street Wedge Plymouth and Gebler Headers with Firestone 500 7 inch slicks on my 69 Vette stocker. I drove the Plymouth on the street with the slicks (my only car) but had to go slow when it rained ....LOL.
Blackjack Headers may have been the worst. Appliance, their quality control department was up-n-down (one good set and one bad set). But really not bad for street cars who wanted a liitle better exhaust flow over a stock system. Then there were the two-piece headers.......... PC
Rocco, On the 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix 'The Alaskan' K/Stock from 1969 A 389/306 HP (A 10.50-1 compression engine with a Carter AFB 525 cfm) With a Code #23B (Heavy-Duty Manual 4-Speed) The Heavy-Duty transmission was standard equipment. Even with the Heavy-Duty 4-speed, you still would snap drive-shafts, blow clutches, and even rip out starters. Not a lightweight, at #3929 lbs. (Nearly 2-Tons) 1965 = F/S 1966 = G/S 1967 = F/S 1968 = J/S 1969 = K/S Even with the Heavy-Duty 4-speed, you had to baby that 'beast' out of the hole at 2000 RPM's. If the salesman gave you inside information, you could order the special posi-rear. Code #Black, 4.30 Gears Code #Green, 3.90 gears Some goodies; Carter AFB 1 7/16" x 1 9/ 16" (525 CFM) Casting #345 Cylinder Heads (68.6 cc) Intake 1.88" - Exhaust 1.60" Code #472 Camshaft - .407/.411 lift - 273*/282* duration - 106/112 overlap
I remember helping put a set of Headman headers on a 283/55 Chevy back in the mid to late sixties, they didn't have bolt on reducers as none were needed as the ends of the headers were the same size as the exhaust pipes and used clamps.
A minor correction.... The Alaskan was a '64 Grand Prix, not a '63 Catalina. The concave rear window is a dead giveaway.... the only Pontiac that used it was the GP. You've got to love the guy for marching to his own drummer, rather than going with the lighter Cat.
BHfanGB, I stand corrected. 1964 Gran Prix. Another 'giveaway', the Grand Prix emblem letters along the lower front fender. It had a nice cam 273*/282* duration....'A Poncho Rumble" Paul
Believe it or not, I didn't really see the "#105" on the current photo until you guys noticed it and said something. Purely coincidental!!! As for the Q-Jet, we probably will try a different one that is on an Olds now going 11.00. Also, I have two more; both are correct for the '72 442 350 4-speed I'm doing, one is the original and the other is a spare. I'm not using the "GOOD #255 ('69 W31 only); that is on the "original W31 350" on the engine stand. I'm seriously considering having on of my spare Muncies done up and THIS time I'll make sure to use a 252 first gear. Thanks again for all the suggestions and offers----I might just be contacting you. Way to go Tweed!!!! Looks AWESOME!!!!! Until next time..... Dave.
