To use a Jeff Gordon term, you have built an Awesome car. Sure glad to see you are back at it. How did you make that cool bend in the roll bar hoops?
I used a JD2 bender, Model 3 with 1.625 dia x 7.5 radius x 180 deg die. Just copied the NHRA Altered 5 point cage specs.
Skip ... I am glad to see you are back, I can only imagine your sorrow. I hope this project provides theraphy and joy for your soul. Like I said in an earlier post ... Face it man, you have mad talent !!! That is one awesome ride and I would be honored to line up next to you in my HA/GR (if I ever get it done !!!???!!!). ScottV
Great seeing the car and getting to visit with you yesterday at the LA Roadster Show. You have done a beautiful job on the car. Looking forward to seeing it run and hearing that 270 GMC in action. Hugs from Patti too.
I want to say thanks to all who stopped by to visit with me at the LA Roadster Show. Working on the car has helped me move forward, but seeing you and visiting was really special and made a real difference. Thanks - Skip Pipes
Racing is a social exercise; its no fun alone. Also, as I age I find a helping hand to be much appreciated. So I just want to give some recognition to those who help me in the shop. Ken, standing next to the HA/GR. He was my Boss 30 years ago (and a good one)! Hes a long time friend who always looks after me. And he personally gets me home when I crash the racecar. Theres a story in there somewhere. Paul; standing next to the Bonneville roadster. A good friend whos there when you need him. Fearless on fibergl***. My youngest son. Hes su****ious of picture takers. So dont tell his friends he helps the old man out from time to time. Skip
So true Skip...that's what has brought the HA/GR bunch to life out here...we have a great bunch of guys in the group and just hanging in the pits crewing for **** on the Barn Job is a bunch of fun...hard to imagine the grins we are going to have the first time out with the Rabbit.
Skip -- Are you going to have your car at the ANRA race next weekend? Hope you make it, would like to see the car.
Well, I thought this car was sold, but it didnt. So, there must be a message in there somewhere. So heres what Im planning, which I think it will improve the value of the car. And the plan is; Im going to run it, and we will see what happens. So here is what I'm going to do. Ill pull the trick 270 GMC & 4-speed out and package it up for sale with the remains of my wrecked 29 Roadster PU. With that in mind, I already pulled the 292 Chevy out of storage and stripped it. I found it 0.060 over with a sleeve in #1 and 2 burnt valves. None of that concern me a bit. Ill going to freshen it up and take it to 0.080 over and slap a glide behind it. I sonic checked the block so I know it will take the overbore. It wont have any exotic pieces, just standard Chevy Hi-performance internals. My intention isn't to be seriously fast, but it wont be very slow either. Lots of Torque is what Im looking for. This wont be a quick changeover, as I cant let it get in the way of the Bonneville Roadster. So now I'm on the hunt for a used Clifford 4 barrel manifold. Failing that, Ill build a Slant-6 Hyper-Pak style for the Chevy. Skip Pipes
Sounds great Skip, take your time and enjoy the build. It will be the****utic and fun. Never asked, do you have a build thread on the Bonneville Roadster? Be fun to see how that one is coming along.
Skip, this is great news. Another SDRA car to run at the ANRA races. I can see it now, my mighty 194" takes on the big mean 305". Can you say 330 mark head start!
No, he can't. Head starts were given in "car length spots" in our period of reference. So he'll be spottin' ya 33 car lengths. You sure that'll be enough?
Skip, I'll wait to add your car to the picture thread 'til you have pictures of the new build, no point confusing the issue for potential buyers. Of course, if you'd rather I go ahead and do it now, I can, your call.
Hi Tom, The LSR Raodsted build thread is over at the Landracing site. I've thought about posting it on the HAMB, but it's a ultra traditional car with a fairly exotic turbo'd, non-traditional engine (Toyota). I love the HAMB, but I really didn't want to have to defend my engine choice. If there is enough non partisan interest in the LSR Roadster, I'll post a few pics. Now for something unmistakably traditional, here are some in-progress pictures of the 292 Chevy. I was able to score a Clifford Intake, a PG trans and the desired Lump Ports for the head. As I type this I'm filthy dirty from cutting, grinding and sanding cast iron. A little sweat equity for saving some cash. The Lump Ports will be here early next week and the machine shop will spot face the head bolt seats. They they will open of heads for 1.94" intakes and 1.60" exhausts. Then screw in 3/8" studs for long-slot rockers. The stock cam is already reground. It's not an exotic combination, just a big inch 305 that should make good torque. I'm on the hunt for a Turbo 400 converter for the PG. Skip Pipes
The Clifford intake manifold, as well as the "Lump Ports" showed up today. I could spend a lot of time reworking an early Carter 4-Barrel for this engine, however I'm thinking of taking the easy way out with a plain Jane, 500 CFM Edelbrock. I can't see any performance improvement with the Edelbrock over a 600 CFM Carter. The Edelbrock is just a new, inexpensive carb that isn't worn out. Skip
