Another question for you Ford guys. I have what i believe is an 85 302 that had throttle body injection on it and i put a carb on it and bought one of those cheap GM HEI type unis off of e-bay. The problem that i have is the new distributor is shorter than the one that came out of the engine from the gear down and doesnt engage the oil pump drive shaft. I have seen many threads about the different lengths of drive shafts but none that seems to be sure. Does anyone know for sure? I have seen 2 different part numbers from Ford Racing but they dont tell what is the difference. I would appreciate any help.
I have worked on many a 302 5.0 engines an never had a problem with the oil pump drive shaft, did you measure the new dist against the old one that came out of the engine. the dist shaft may be shorter from the gear down an not making a connecting.
I too did a 85 302 conversion to carb. Used one of those HEI units with the wimpie adaptor. The adaptor kept coming loose before I could install distributer, I went to a 70s ford electronic with modual box.
I'll 2nd that. You could find them any day at your local pick a part too. Plus I think those GM HEI distributors look goofy on the SBF. Frank
I did that swap on my 84 302 in my F100 and the 69 302 in my 46, no problem with either that I can recall. Are you sure the distributor is seating properly?
Im sure its a 302 and the dizzy is seated all the way. The distributor that came out of the engine is about a half inch longer from the gear down. The new one doesnt even reach the pump shaft.
Also the 351W uses a 5/16" hex shaft the 289-302 is 1/4'' hex on a side note that the weak link in a SBF is that shaft both ARP and Melling offer a H.D. Shaft around $20 it is cheap insurance and a must have in your build.A real good source on the SBF is: www.sbftech.com This should clear things up: http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/5-0l-tech/133446-302-351-distributor-shafts-same.html
OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFTS M-6605-A302 289-302 Non-EFI ➀ M-6605-B302 289-302 EFI and Non-EFI M-6605-A341 351W/All 351 Ford Racing ➀ Heavy duty. Chrome moly steel. Centerless ground. NOTE: ➀ Will not fit EEC-IV equipped engines. M-6605-B302 is the shorter of the two. And yes, it is very confusing.
Anytime you do that swap remember that the length of the distributor where it seats onto the block to bottom of the shaft where it houses oil pump shaft is a difference of about half inch. Tbi setups have a pump shaft about 7.2 inches and in old school carbed setups from factory have one about 8.19. I'm converting my 85 marquis to a Carb and had to replace distributor and wired in a duraspark 2 ignition module. Replace pump shaft with right length and good to go... just dont know the best and easiest way to get original shaft out. Any ideas?
Strange,I swapped in an 87 5.0 EFI,swapped to a carb, and went to a MSD distributor for a 289/302 and it fit perfect. I had never seen or heard of this problem, good to know! ROY.
Ford has discontinued the A302, they only offer the B302 now If it is still set up like stock, you have to drop the oil pan and the oil pump to get the original out.
Plus they have 5/16" diameter hex... The 302's/5.0L are a 1/4" hex.... Hope I'm right! Could be 3/8" diameter for the 351 Windsor and 5/16" diameter for the 302..
