That is pure automotive sculpture. I'm glad you shared those pics before it all gets covered up!

*sigh*... That port work makes me sport a pudgy. Some truly beautiful work!

  3. Hey Roy . . . was showing off your manifold to Jeff Fowler today -- was fun to hear his review. Keep in mind that this man has built about as many blown alcohol motors as you can imagine --- works with the best stuff out there. Not to tip his hat, but he puts out exotica $60,000 motors every week.

He took a detailed look at your design as was very impressed with how you used the rounded shapes to direct flow to the ports, liked the overall design and thought the welding was excellent. He really liked our work - now that is cool stuff hugh?

Spoken from a man who does this professionally - every day -- I'd say you achieved a "Happy Face" and a "Gold Star" on your manifold fabrication work! Great Job . . .

Dale, glad to hear Jeff thinks the design is good. It's always encouraging to hear an experienced opinion. The real thrill will be when this speed wagon rolls---FAST---

  9. Parts are flowing!

Just heard from Crower -- crankshaft and rods are shipping out today . . . should have them next week.

Back to design work for me:

    a) Top Block Plate:
This is a steel plate to tie both sides of the block together (left to right) as well as give me a place to weld in the exhaust "elbows" that turn out from the top of the block. It will be about 3/4" thick - have windows and should provide some much needed strength to the block. Given that the FlatCAD has no material in the valley area, I'm suspect over the strength of the block in the middle area.

Side-to-Side Strength: Any of you who have ran high-output SBF roller blocks (late model stuff), know how blocks can crack (even with a valley) -- right down the middle. My idea (as nobody has practical experience) - is to tie the block together on the top with this plate - and on the bottom with the big-*** steel girdle that I designed. Kind of like steel "rubber bands" to hold ole' Medusa together. Do we need it? . . . who knows . . . Will it Work? . . . who knows . . . Will the Block Take the Horspower? . . . gosh, we sure hope so! :D

    b) Front Timing Cover and Accessory Drive Plate: This is an aluminum plate that converts the timing cover bolt pattern from FlatCAD to BBC. Also, is goes out past the block on the p***enger side to mount the Barnes dry-sump pump, water pump and injector pump.

I'll be getting with Don on the top plate and Kevin on the front plate!

Keep cranking boys - we have to make it!

  12. I know this is all R&D work and uncharted territory but it sounds good to me. I think it will work. ;)

  13. Weekend Update - Shop Cleanup - Post Porting: I spent the first 1/2 of the weekend cleaning out the machine/engine area of my workshop -- due to all the porting that I'd been doing. I'd covered all my machines with drop-cloths - thank gosh! Even with that, had to clean every single machine, vacuum just about every square inch of the floor and anyplace that was exposed -- as porting leaves more **** than you can imagine. I'd moved out a couple of engines - just so they didn't run the risk of getting cast iron dust into them.

    Back to 3D Design Work:

I've been designing a steel plate to go across the port/manifold surface - side to side. The purpose is two-fold: a) To give me a stout piece of steel to weld the exhaust system elbows to b) To provide a method to structurally tie both sides of the block together.

I reviewed the concept with Jeff Fowler and he believes it is a good thing to do as well - to provide strength and help keep the block from wanting to split down the center or crack in bad places. The FlatCAD has no valley material -- so there is very little cast iron to hold each bank together (side to side). Hopefully this plate will act as a sort of 'Top End Girdle' - similar to the 'Bottom End Girdle' on the other side.

Additional bolts - to tie it into the block: I've added 6 counter-sunk socket-head bolts on each side (non-standard). We'll drill/tap the block for these additional bolts - as they help tie the plate to the block surface. One thing I really don't like about the FlatCAD is that the entire intake/exhaust system is only held on with 4 bolts per side . . . imagine trying to seal the exhaust and the blower manifold with just 4 3/8 bolts -- looks like a mess to me, so I added a few more.

Here is a picture of the CAD model:

I’m really getting itchy to see this thing put together Dale. Tying stuff down on the top of this engine is a real nightmare isn’t it? The next big trick is access to install and wrench on all those fasteners. I’m with you all the way in spirit at least. Great work and innovation!!!!!

Whoo-Hoo! Russ Meeks, Finish Line Coatings, has agreed to sponsor us, as has Delcam! I'm stoked about this! :D

Now, we'll be tearing the rear end apart, the front and rear wheel bearings, pistons, valves, heads, etc., to be coated. We'll also send the exhaust in to be Cermachromed, both for looks, and to keep the heat down in the engine compartment.

Thanks to Pops29, Delcam is/has providing softare for the cnc work!

    Thanks again Don!

  17. I think I'm going to have the bottoms of my feet coated  That way, when we're hauling **** and the brakes fade, I can open the door and drag em' on the salt and slow Medusa down.

Now keep it clean boys . . . I can just hear all the other "parts" of mine that you all are thinknig to recommend being coated.

    Thanks guys!

Car came out of the paint booth this morning, so pics to follow!

In the mean time, we're thrashing on the FlatCad, trying to get it together. We were going to 'spilt' the siamesed center exhaust, but we're running out of time.

What I'm looking for is a pair of 3-1 collectors, with 2 -2", and one 2.5" inlets.

Anyone here do that type of work?

  25. Can't wait for the pix! If you were a little closer I could hook you up with the guy that made my headers, he might be able to make you up something.

  26. BumpStick Baby!

My Oh My . . . just received our custom CAM today . . . and it is one big ****er! I'm not going to give away all the specs - let's just say, it would never fit in a Flathead Ford :D We plan to push as much air and fuel into ole' Medusa as she can stand

One nice piece of 8620 Billet . . . ready to rock:

Things are coming along gang -- it is still going to be a thrash, but we're doing everything we can to make the salt . . .
