I have recently purchased a 49 mercury, I have separated the body from the frame and I thought the serial number on the frame would be in the same place as my 51 but after cleaning up the frame it is not. Is it stamped elsewhere?

Ive got a 1950 N.A.D.A Used car guide that I usually find all kinds of good information in......I looked up your merc and it states firstly that the serial number is at the top of the transmission housing and the left front frame rail (my 41 merc has the number at the left front frame rail about a foot back from the radiator)....as a point of interest, it also states that 49 serial numbers start at 9cm101 and go to acm302439. Hope that helps....Incidently, if youre restoring your merc, Ive got a two volume set of overhaul manuals for it that might help you out....

My 49 has the numbers stamped in the top of the frame on the passenger side just under the tow board. I believe it was on the X member part of the frame about 6 inches from where it actually meets the main frame. There is a flair in the frame, it's just behind that.

they usually have a couple on the passenger side, one will be almost directly down from the fire wall and the other is farther back on the frame which is blocked by the body. and i think there may be a 3rd one of the rear crossmembers which you cant see either.

  6. here's the chassis we did, positioned same as mentioned above, front middle and also on the rear crossmember.....(see the areas left in satin/grey)

We just bought a 49/51 Merc Rolling Original Chassis, uncut! Plan on building a complete new Chassis for display using the eng/trans/booster/cyl & front lowering spacer kits on it we manufacture along with Posie Rear Low Springs, Fatman's dropped spindle uprights and ECI front disc brake kit installed.
THE ONLY SERIAL NUMBER I CAN FIND IS ON THE RIGHT FRONT FRAME RAIL: 50LA13035M . Does that make it a 1950 manufactured in LA, CA?? Anyone? Thanks, Butch
