I realize mine won't be a very popular opinion, but I try to stay away from all the "holy grails". Because "everybody wants one", you're gonna: 1) Pay out the ass to get a project in the first place. 2) Pay out the ass again for any parts needed. 3) With the exception of minor details, you'll find yourself pretty much locked in to the standard format for that particular holy grail. ( A chopped, slammed Merc is pretty damn cool. A whole line of chopped, slammed Mercs gets to be pretty much same ol', same ol'.) 4) You're gonna be really pissed when lotsa folks walk past your grail to look at something unique someone has done with a freakin' Studebaker, Rambler or whatever the hell. Just my slant on things.
If you don't buy it, give another hamber a chance to buy it! Retromotors, I like your views on cars even though I am one of the same ol', same ol' guys Some of my favorite cars are off the wall unique builds/customs.
looks like a great buy at $5000, good buy at $8000, fair buy at $10,000 and an OK buy at $12,000 OK buys are gotten from people who don't need to sell their car Fair buys are gotten from people who would like to sell their car Good buys are gotten from people who want to sell their car Great buys are gotten from from people who are desperate to sell their car or just don't know what it is. nice find, nothing worth bragging about or complaining that i see
What is the condition of the floors, trunk pan, and inner/outer rockers? IMHO the price is above market value. Might be worth in the $5K to $8k range? The value is based on what someone is willing to pay.
thats pushing it for a merc that doesnt run and has rust in your neck of the woods. ive paid 10k for them not running, but then there was also NO RUST!! and im usually paying more because there local..
12k seems a bit much to me but I'm a cheap bastard! Someone that is looking for a Merc coupe might not think twice about dropping the cash for that one. It is worth what someone will pay and I would bet he will sell it for 12k or real close to that price.
It looks 100% complete to me. Think of all of the sunday morning sleep ins you will have because you dont have to look for parts at swap meets! I reckon its worth it just because of the fact its a 1 owner, garaged merc coupe. In my neck of the woods, It would be double the asking price. I'll buy it, whats the address?
Hey Delton...here is a get in and go orig? (so the owner says) Running and driving 50 merc....4 dr http://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/2463218893.html Greg~!
12k seems like a lot of money...but its a 50 Merc coupe, unmoleted, original owner, and its all there...how much of a premiun is that worth...? From the work I've seen done on this site, that car is a easy fix....talk him down however you can , but if you want a 50 Merc coupe...go for it..!....unless your trying to turn it for a profit, then run away..
Obviously the car is an icon. For someone who has the $ to do a complete resto, 12k might not be terrible, but for the average cat I think 8-9k would be more realistic. If he gets what he wants good for him. Those pics of the owners back in the day are awesome!
a few things, for you dudes in Europe, I think you guys are partly to blame too because you guys have a stronger currency than ours so stupid prices to us is fair to you . and for all of you that keep saying its complete and original/unmolested, have you guys ever built a ground up kustom? I have found that your going to change most of that stuff anyways so what does it matter? you're not restoring the car. I learned this lesson with my 54 as I paid a bunch of money for a car I immediatly disassembled, I just bought another one for about a 1/8th of what I paid for mine and it has every thing I am going to need. As for unmolested, as long as some other yahoo doesnt put a moon roof in it or something who cares, youre going to cut it up anyways. if you are build a period early 50's coupe then yea all that small stuff is great or if you find a merc that is really solid and clean then all the small stuff is great but if its all crusty as hell why does it matter. I think the merc that Ltorch has in the classifieds is a solid car that is priced accordingly. some one said in the thread earlier about it being a fair price, sure, but its more than I would ever pay because I see to many other ones in good shape under 10k. speaking of which all of you guys going on about how you would buy it, pjgarst had a pretty damn clean 50 baby lincoln with a merc front clip for like 5g's obo and that thing was for sale forever before it sold and it was more solid than this car. think about what you would actually use from it.
Hahahaha 12 is way high (here in nc maybe not so-cal). My Merc sat on THIS sight for over a year at 10,000, with a rebuilt engine and all the parts to make or run drive steer and stop...and it had zero rust! What about the 2dr 49 Merc del (hotdamn) Just traded for that has sat on craigslist here in Charlotte for over a year at 5500? The guy couldn't give it away!
my point exactly. if 12k is such a great price then there are 3 in the classifieds that I expect to see gone in the am. quit talking out tha side of ya'lls necks!
Current Old Cars Report Price Guide values for a #4 $6,000 #5 $3,600 $12K is about double what it's worth, seriously. A #3 car, which this one is definitely not, is valued currently at $13,500
Barrett-Jackson? Europe? Seriously? Get a grip already. NOBODY is reponsible for pricing except the buyer and seller. Is it worth $12K? To some maybe, to others no, in general it's close. "Well I've seen blah blah sell for yadda ya..." has nothing to do with it unless they too were 100% complete 1 owner all there not full of bondo and stupid mods examples. Ya want it? Make an offer. That car as a 1 owner and all there example carries a slight premium. If not to you, hey, right on. Pass. Barrett-Jackson should get Haterade as a show sponsor.
Car people from all over the world have been buying and importing cars from the U.S. for years, decades, hell, for well over half a century and more. It is only the last six months or so that our currency has made parity with yours, so I don't think it's fair to for you to accuse us and to hold us partly responsible because some guy who likes watching auctions on T.V. with a merc coupe, 8600 miles east of here, with obvious emotional attachment to his car that he bought new 61 years ago, and is asking a price that you probably would ask for it if you were selling it anyway. Part of the reason that we might be willing to pay a premium for cars like this is probably the fact that these and many other desirable models were never sold here new and are scarce and are always in constant demand. I think that the remark about Barret Jackson is closer to the mark, thats only if your looking for some one to blame that is. Cheers, H.R.D. Oh, and if you don't like this particular one owner, garaged '50 Merc coupe that you have found, buy the next one you find,or the next one, or the next, or the next. Just my 2c worth.
this is quickly becoming a rather moot point. Heres the deal guys, Have people from Europe and Japan been buying American cars for the last decade, often at higher premiums than what most americans normally pay for them? YES. Have we all heard some jack leg say something like, My cousin saw one of those model A coupes go on Barret Jackson for 40 grand so I know that my rat rod sedans has got be worth at least 20k. I know that sounds a bit inflamatory, but seriously I cant count how many times I have heard such rediculious statements... I am not hating on B-J, ebay, the weather, the world, europeans or what the hell ever, I am simply stating the obvious. so if you would please actually READ my post before you start making some insinuating comments. further more I am not some punk ass new kid talking out the side of my neck, I have been around for a few minutes, that used to mean something around here... and last I didnt start this thread so I could complain about the 12k price, I just merely noted that I thought it was a little unrealistic, thats it. I sure as hell did not start this thread so I could have my intentions taken out of context and distorted. so with that said. get off my ass. I just thought the pics of the dude and his old lady were cool thats it.
But there is always someone with deeper pockets than most of us, so he just might get his $12K. Looks like too much work for me at that price, I was thinking $5-6K. Bob
oh and for clarification the Barret Jackson comment I made in my initial post was his comment not mine. He said that he had been watching that show and saw how valuable they were when fixed up.
and there is a lot of people that like to talk shit that would never pay that much for it either, If they would the classifieds would be devoid of mercs currently.
How bad do ya want it is the question not is it worth $12k !!!!!! I gave $8500 for my 51 in my avtar and it is pretty rust free and I thought It was a grand or so to much but it was going to be mine somehow after I went to look at it !!!! We only get to do this thing called LIFE once so lets do it right !!!!!!
I agree, I am one of the sellers of a mint rust free 49 Merc. coupe that has a shit load of money thrown at it over ($30.K) not including the cost of the original car. It currently has a hairline crack in the block so I am pissed off with it and asking $28.K for it with no takers. Try spending $28.K on the OP merc and see if you end up with my car . I think not!! If you want it, pay the price and by the way the old pictures ARE COOL.
that sucks bro... Sorry to hear that, I wish you luck with that sale! I can say that have a few friends that are big flathead guys and I have heard them talk about fixing these sort of cracks as most flatheads have them. so its not a death blow to the engine she just needs a little going through
