Hot Rods pre-war coupe build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by skatermann, Jun 21, 2011.

  1. Hey, my name is Joe, I'm fifteen. I bought a model A coupe body about three months ago, and I've been collecting parts for it since. I want to build a pre-war styled coupe, something someone my age would have built in 1940.
I know really only roadsters were hopped up at that time, but there must have been at least a few coupe hot rods. So with that in mind, here is my build!

the first four photos are of my car, the rest are my inspiration. I pulled them off the Hamb. the cars I know who own, I will say. otherwise, if its yours, call it!

joe, congrats on the build, great to see a young guy getting his hands dirty.
the additional pics you've added highlight one thing, simplicity.
stripped down jalopies, reprising a great age.
keep the build simple, study this site, one thread is hotrods of the 40's.build it to the best of your abilities and don't be afraid to ask questions.
the model a is a great car to learn your craft on.
good luck, and keep us up to date, thommo.

    btw,the brown 31 is mine.

  4. Hey Joe, great seeing you build this coupe, always like to see the young guns getting started. I'll be watching this build and as the OP said, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. Good luck man :)

  5. thanks for the comments guys, and thomo, your coupe is great!

Search pics of the Cochran/Tardel coupe. It is a perfect prewar build. And yes they built coupes they just didn't have a class for them on the dry lakes originally.

Oh and by decree of the 'beaner you are now 18. Good luck on your build.

Get the book by Tardel and Bishop. The best one for this style, I think.

  9. Hey Joe,
Great project ya got there - just about what I wanted to do when I was 15 but I didn't have the know how or the $$$. I admire your ambition! You can carry it with you forever. You have the HAMB here to help - anyone around there in person who can help too? Keep us posted!!!!!
And yes ya should pick up that Tardel/ Bishop book - dug through my copy many times and it's getting a little dog eared by now!

I started out at your age too... Actually a little earlier, but that was thirty five years ago! It's nice to see younger guys coming into this deal, and I will be watching as you get this up and going intently. If I can answer any questions, just ask. That's what this place is all about!

don't give up on your dream. when i was your age: i wanted a "hot rod" model a. at age 72 i got one! and it's a HOT banger.

  13. thanks for the suggestion on the book, I actually already have it!
it has a lot of great stuff in it

  14. update

today I'm buy my engine, trannie, and rearend! its gonna be model a four-banger, with some speed parts. stock trans and rear. I'll be running mechanical brakes, '35 ford wires, stock A radiator shell. seems to me like there aren't enough A's the stock shell!

I basically want a coupe version of chris's roadster when it had the banger in it.

  16. That primer red one with the Hallock windshield is Zach Suhr's old one

  17. that car is one of my favorites

  18. Mine too. When that car was for sale I was trying to figure out how to buy it. It didn't work out, but it kicked me in the butt to find a body. I did, and built that lil banger powered beater.

  19. chris, what wheel/tires do you run on your roadster? are they 16's? they look great whatever they are!

  20. They are 17's, 5.00 and 7.00's if memory serves me right

Glad to see a young guy build his first hot rod the right way... by doing research and building it the way he would have 70 years ago. Good luck, looking forward to the build.

I got all the parts home and even ended up buying a roadster with a good chassis that I will put under the coupe! the roadster body will be a future project that will get the '36 21 stud flattie, '37 tranny, and '40 rear that were originally going into the coupe. the body has a bit of rust that was repaired poorly with galvanized sheetmetal and bondo, but I still think I got a good deal.
an A roadster is one of my main two dream cars, the other a 34 coupe.

    heres some photos!

I like where this is going! Congrats on having your head screwed on straight...KEEP IT THAT WAY...15, and you already own a coupe and a roadster.....nice.

  29. here is another inspiration pic. I think its astrozombie's coupe, correct me if I'm wrong

I think this is the closest to what I want to do right now, in the beginning I'm gonna run 19's, maybe later change to 17's or 18's
