Popiel and all the other TV snake oil
    salesmen would be proud!

yep its like paint..but very cool because it can be used on potmetal pieces that would otherwise be junk. Finish the parts with filler and primer, then spray chrome. I saw an article where it was used on inside window garnish mouldings that had been cut for a chopped top, they came out very nice.

It all comes down to one thing , NOTHING can replace the look and durability of real chrome , bottom line . Spray on chrome is a spray paint with clear coat to help protect it and that's just about it . Some looks very nice BUT it's NOT CHROME !
Power coating is another way to go BUT it will not look like chrome but is very durable and you can get that in many different colors as well .
As for bumpers , aluminum is another good alternative when polished up and looks really nice ! They are not as strong as steel but looks very nice when polished !
    Just a thought !

When real chrome is outlawed, only outlaws will have real chrome.

Very true. As cool as it might be, if it's cool for the mases than it's uncool....kinda what street rodders did to hot rodding.

How can a polymer coating ever be more durable than chrome, one of hardest metals?
The only real advantages that you can use it on substrates other then metal.

My old boss had a deep desire to copy McLaren F1 and has a few Lola F3 and even two seat cars sprayed by two different body shops using Alsa Chrome in 2007.
Very labour intensive and expensive and looked like Krylon when they were done. Pointless

Spectra Chrome @ SprayOnChrome.com, voted best new product at 2008 SEMA show. They even used it on Anderson's 'Grave Digger' for the show. I got the video, brochures, etc. Looks pretty interesting; pricey, but not near as pricey as playing hostage to the local Plating shop if it works and lasts.

not sure what jay was referring to on his show.. but.. there are alternatives to chrome..

I suspect that basf has liscensed or bought the rights to the process used my xtalic..

back in 2009 i attended a summer class at M.I.T.

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=373799

MIT had developed a method of depositing nanoscale particles on NEW parts.

this IS NOT spray on chrome. and is much more durable..

Rustoleum has a nice spray on paint. Called Metallic something-or-other. When freshly sprayed it looks like chrome. But I guess it flashes or something and becomes a nice silverish color. I am using it on some parts of my caddy. The wheels and the air cleaner cover turned out real nice. But it is not chrome either.

Yep, if you read the BASF link that is for a hard chrome alternative and not a decorative chrome alternative. To use a a coating on things like hydraulic cylinder rods.

This is one of those times I'm very happy to live in a country where the envioronmental protection laws are fifteen to twenty years behind worlds best practice..

You can still get chrome done well here, at a reasonable price if you shop around.

    That shit is snake oil.

We have a local shop here in Indy that does alot of Indy cars and custom stuff with it. Looks really good. I was told that the fake chrome plastic wheels on my O-T Mercury Sable are the same process?

Being an outside part, the plating on your Sable wheels is most likely the real electroplated nickel/chrome process over plastic. Purpose made plastics are commonly made to accept an acid etch/palladium pretreatment that makes them conductive enough for electroplating, and it is very common with late model plastic grills and other exterior trims. I have yet to see this process work well enough for cost-effective custom/restorative uses.

And to answer a coment made above about being able to save junked pot metal with paint on methods:
I routinely plate the most rotten potmetal there is and warranty it for as long as you own it against the plating coming up. Cost is higher than typical for the extra work required, but it's real plating that will outlast any paint on "chrome" process. That said, I believe there are uses for the paint on stuff, and disposal monster trucks and race cars are definitely some of them.
