A group of guys came by ZAKIRA'S yesterday on there way to Indy, and the MILLER MEET. I noticed they knew there shit, and my boss Jim said "that tall guy is REALLY sharp".. Well, we went to lunch and everyone introduced themselves and guess who the TALL guy was!!

Our own MICHAEL FERNER from Germany!

I looked at jim and said "Hey! That guy knows his shit!" and Jim said "I said that!" Ha ha!

Great to put a face with name..

Look forward to picking your ENDLESS mind at Millwauki this weekend!

The Tommy Lee owned KK2000 is one of my favorites as well. What I think I know about it: Chassis number 319-48 (I think that makes it the third KK2000 built.) Driven by Mack Hellings in all of it's AAA starts. (see champcarstats.com for results '48-'49)

Tommy Lee apparently took his own life in rather spectacular style and the car ended up at MGM studios. It was used in the "staged" racing scenes and close ups in "To Please A Lady" (the real racing footage is Chitwood in the Wolfe Spl). Bud Rose was the stand in for Gable. I believe the "staged" racing scenes were shot off the back of Manny Ayulo's #44 track roadster with the turtle deck removed and a seat for a camera operator and a camera mounted.

I don't know what happened to the car for a few years after that. Joe Gemsa acquired the car at some point and I got to see it win a 500 mile race on Memorial Day 1958 at Riverside Raceway, with Bud Rose driving.

Once again I don't know where it went after that. Tom Malloy owns it today and it is beautifully restored to 1948 trim, with the exception of polished Halibrands in place of the original wires. Mr. Malloy brings it to Fontana pretty regularly and runs it pretty hard. It was also at The Speedway this year.

    Black vette.
Actually the car in the your photos is the 1932 "Don Lee" Alfa Romeo P3 Grand Prix car. It has a supercharged straight eight, 2.9 litre engine.
It also has a V-shaped twin driveshaft and two differentials. It is displayed in original unrestored condition.

Will there be a HAMB meet-up at the Miller Meet? I hope to be there Friday afternoon and would enjoy meeting some of the people who post on this site.

Anyone know how I could get copies of Leo Goosen's drawings of the Miller front drive unit? In "real life" I am a gear design engineer and my reverse engineering paper [F1 oil pump drive]from 2010 was very well received. An analysis of this groundbreaking drive unit using modern computer programming and 3-D CAD models would be a nice way to educate my younger colleagues on a true innovator. Most under 50 engineers sadly did not know anything about Harry Miller or Leo Goosen.

PS: The paper is a free download from my web site.

Do a google on Gordon Elliott White. Send him an E-mail with what you need.
He has a vast catalog of Miller, Goosen, Offy, M-D, Drake....... drawings. He has never failed to have what I am looking for.

Hey Josh, we had a GREAT time at Zakira's!! I kept saying "if heaven is half as nice as this place, I want to die NOW!" :D

It was great meeting you, Jim and all the other guys. Right now, we're at Indy, where I met Bill Castle, Donald Davidson and Bill Spoehrle yesterday. See you on Friday!

I've been away from the thread for a few days... Lee I was saddened to learn of the passing of your dad. I'll be holding you and your family in my prayers. I'm also remembering Baldtireman and his family as they grieve the passing of his brother Chuck.
    Blessings,

Here is what I recieved from Jeff Johsnon who has the NET website, as to why it's been down since Wednesday afternoon:

    "good news and bad news.

good news is that your photo article generated a large spike in traffic to my website.

bad news is that if caused our site to exceed our allocated bandwidth causing our site to be shut down.

My main site will be back up sometime next week, but they have increased my monthly fee.
Between the increased fees I now have to pay to our webhosting and several days of lost sales from my business it looks like this will cost me over $5,000 to fix.

Unless I can find a cheaper webhosting company, it looks like I will not be able to afford to put the race report page back up."

Can anyone out there give us a little help on this, maybe?

Good news! The website is back and running!

  18. Would Zakira's have any interest in turning those drawings into frameable prints? I'd venture a guess at least a few hundred folks would love to have a set of those if at all possible...

They have an Advanced web hosting plan that is Only 50 British Pounds (about $75, or only 40 bucks a YEAR!)for TWO years hosting and LOTS of space. My website has lots of pages and photos. (more pages than i can count, and over 500 photos)It is almost never down, and has easy upgrade and change (HELM)connection. Been using it for about ten years now, so I'm satisfied. If you need more space, you can more than double it for cheap..

Thanks, Josh. I got his card at the Miller Meet today & will be in touch. If other more talented people don't post photos I will share mine. For now I can't resist putting this one up. My friend Gregg Kisline, a noted restorer of midgets & 1/4 midgets & builder of scale cars, got to fulfill a boyhood dream of driving a real Indy Car at the Milwaukee Mile.

I would have said hello but you were busy getting those fabulous cars ready to go.

    Thanks guys!

Well, I was getting them ready to go. Got to run Two HARD sessions in the HCS Miller. Saw 5500 on the tach a few times (in high gearm thats haulin in that car!) Then I hear a noise... :(

Heard a grinding, rubbing, growling sound.. So, I killed it, and got it whoad, took it in. Jim said "Pull it apart, see whats up" So I did..

The Ring gear bolts that WERE lock tighted in.. backed out and started rubbing the case.

GOOD NEWS- Nothing else got hurt, ring and pinion, spiders, bearings are all fine!

BAD NEWS- Car is parked for the rest of the weekend.

We were actually SUPER lucky it went the way it did.. It could have locked up when I was at full tilt..

video the "novi" replica from Milwaukee yesterday engine runs good, need to work on the suspension a little, kinda felt like it was set up for Kokomo not Milwaukee, needs stiffer bars and shocks, didn't run it real hard since it's not mine and I would hate to have to fix it

Roy- the engine sounded like a chevy V-8. Is that what it has in it? I also sounded like it has a multi-gear transmission in it. Am I right on that?
