    Front Trans seal

I came home yesterday ready to post and found a construction crew had ripped out the internet cable that feeds my neighborhood. Sounds like BS, I know. I mounted the plate that holds the seal in the lathe so I could cut it out to fit a modern seal. Halfway into cutting it the plate split in two. I was wondering how you were supposed to get the original felt seal in there and now I know. Actually this two part deal made it easier to install a modern seal. I also had to clean up the sealing surface on the input shaft. Also, I've finally go the speedster frame set up to begin body work and painting. 1982 Alfa red is the color. PPG # 72528. I'm thinking a single stage urethane for the chassis and components.

    Chassis

Sanded on the chassis and cleaned bits of hidden dirt and grease. Not much to see except crud. Put a little bondo on a few viewable parts. This weekend I hope to tape up the engine.

No problem. I keep a ready supply since I own a MG and a Singer.

PS I maybe considering Hummer/Jeep flame red. I know, I know, I'm a weenie when it comes to paint.

I'm not sure that'll work. As far as I know Marelli smoke is different ...

I realised that the red oxide primer I had on the chassis was the same color as the Alfa red I picked out. Yellow? A giant canary.

    Finally

Things are finally back to normal, well, semi-normal anyway. I worked on the chassis cleaning dirt, grinding off imperfections and filling in nasty spots, etc. Then I wrapped up the engine. Tomorrow, more cleaning and filling and sanding until at some point I won't give a damn and we'll see some color. I discovered something interesting about the front kingpins. I always wondered why the upper part of the axle was so big. As I was cleaning up I noticed there's a roller bearing in there. I guess without that bearing it'd be pretty hard to turn the steering wheel with a 2000lb engine pushing down on it.

Going back a few weeks you asked about wood steering wheels & brass spark advance units. I was at Luray VA last week & shot some pics for you. I'm on my iPhone now so this may be a multi-part post.

So, the spark advance units were often at bottom, but not always. Later ones maybe had more variable placement.

The wood wheels seem to be mostly brass spoked and some are screwed into a wood- covered metal frame that is then covered with wood. Some looked to be steam- bent wood and some carved or turned.

To me there does not seem to be a wrong way to go for the wheel or advance unit.

    Thanks for the input BuiltFerComfort.
Cleaned and sanded and filled again. No pictures so just imagine bondo and red primer and little piles of greasy dirt mixed with bondo dust on top of a blue tarp. I'm trading out with Israel the iron door maker. He paints my chassis ( kinda similar to painting an iron door with scroll work) and I check out his Toyota PU that's running bad.

    Paint prep

It's hard to get anything done during summer. I think my whole output for the week is getting two axles out. I figured it'd be easier to take out the axles and backing plates than try and tape around them. That also eliminates the brake cables. So I think that's it. Next sanding and then painting. I've almost, sort of, tentatively, kinda picked out a color. Jeep/Chrysler PR4--very, very deep red.

Wow, didn't realize you don't have your drivers license yet. How long until you can drive what you are building? :D

On a more serious note, keep up the good work. Can't wait to see this beast finished.

    Jerry,

With the axle apart, can you get bigger backing plates & drums that bolt on? If the brakes are less than what you want, now is the time.

I certainly don't want to see this project in a tree.
