So I picked up this car from a member here on the forum, (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=593043) and I've had alot of bad luck with it...most recently the hood popped up on me on the highway and bent all to shit. Body man says it can't be repaired, so I wanted to ask on here if anybody might know of some places to pick up a replacement? I'm not sure how much the body dimensions changed from 51, but I wonder if a 49-51 hood would be an option for a replacement? Maybe someone could help me out with that info as well...is there an aftermarket option for this car? Would a glass replacement be a good way to go? I kinda like the look of the 49-51 peaked hoods better anyhow...Also gonna need new hood hinges if anyone knows where to pick those up? I appreciate any insight you guys might have for me on the parts and repair job. Thanks in advance!

The 52 was a new body style, not even close to a 49-51.A 53 & 54 are nearly the same[trim differences],same year Fords are shorter.I own a 52 Monterey and hinges and latches can be a pain, the hinges are rebuildable. ROY.

Well it was a nice car....damn.

49-51 are completely different cars when compared to the 52-54's. You need to hit a junk yard and find another 52-54 for the hood and get busy doing the swap and grab the hinges while your at it. And expect a ton of time to be devoted to getting the hinges. You have to take the fenders off the car to get them off so you'll be doing it twice to get some new ones and get them installed on the car. They are a royal pain in the ass!!!!! Good luck.

I never had problems with that car ever. Drove it to work a ton on the interstate, doctors appointments, out to eat....like a bunch and only had it stall on me once. Seems like you have a black cloud over yer head haha!!!

Thanks everyone for the replies...I really appreciate the info!! Does anyone happen to know if there is a fiberglass option for the hood, or what some of the pros and cons are of opting for such a thing?? And as far as the catch parts and hinges go, is the best bet to just scour junkyards? Thanks again to those who replied.

  10. I really dig that car, hope you get it all figured out.

Check out my 49-51 company list thread:

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=331564&highlight=mercury+reproduction

I had talked to this guy once, try him out he's in WI I believe:

PM me if you want some help. I need to fix or buy a new hood latch for mine. I also had my stock hinges rebuilt by 51Gringo on here, my stockers were too tired.

  11. I read in a magazine that you had to pull the fenders to replace the hinges. Guess what? I had a 53 Mercury and we replaced them without pulling the fenders. I pulled the Mercury emblem from the front fender and worked a 1/4 inch extension through the hole and then put a socket on it from inside the fender. That and wrenches all used on the inside of the fender can be done. I think also Ford hinges may work.

Post # 7 is a 52 Mercury, you can tell by the side trim, one year only and Mercury only. The hood looks like it was highly modified Merc, not a Lincoln.I was told a 52-54 Ford hood is too short to work on a Merc.Post nine is a 52 or 53,hard to tell with the trim removed and front bumper modified, the hood may be a Lincoln.I own an original 52 Mercury Monterey 2dr hardtop waiting it's turn for rebuild!! Join the '52-'56 Ford Owner's group (same year Mercs are in the group as well) and ask the same question. You should have some luck. There was also a '52-54 Merc that was on here being parted out from Michigan about a week ago and the hood looked great. I'll try to find it. Good luck.

  20. I like the look of that Lincoln hood (the white one in your post), I think it looks cleaner without the factory scoop.

Well, if that's not a Lincoln hood in post #9, I wonder what that hood came off of...here's another view of that same car I think..

I mean, all of the '52 factory Merc models had the scoop right? Does anyone know for certain if the same year Lincoln hoods would work on a '52 Merc? Someone above had mentioned "baby Lincolns?" Is that the Capri you're referring to? I really would like to lose the scoop, just not sure how to do it..thanks to all who replied!

I was able to go measure a '55 Lincoln Capri hood this morning, and sad to say it won't fit!! The Lincoln/Merc hoods are extremely close, but the Lincoln hood is about 1 1/2" too narrow on the hinge side at the cowling. So I'm stickin' with the Merc hood...just wanted to let folks know in case they were taking the time to measure for me. Thanks again to all those who replied!

There is a reason this nut is called the Mad Greek! Lures you to his dump & tries to sell you garbage for top dollar while he hoads.

  30. I have tons of 52-54 Lincoln Capri parts in SW Washington state. But have no idea on interchange.
