    Sometimes, even that isn't enough.

I needed a new lock cylinder for my 91 K2500. Napa & Federated had chrome. Chrome bad. No like chrome. Jumped onto the Advanced website & found the one I wanted. Black. Nice, soothing, cool black. The website even showed that the local store stocked that number. Handy!

I cruised up & gave counter geek the number.
    "What's this?"
"That's your part number, off the website."
"We don't show that. What's it fit."

Kriminey, back to square one. Year, make, model, blood type, medical card, passport............. He finally comes up with a chrome one. Don't want chrome. I can get chrome anywhere. He finally turns his screen around, so I can see the inventory list. Right there. RIGHT FRIGGEN THERE!! Item #3, lock cylinder, iginition, BLACK. Go figure, it even has the same part number THAT I GAVE HIM WHEN I WALKED IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Oh, sorry. Didn't see that one."
Dude! Sometimes you gotta read past line 1.

There was some good new. It was $5 cheaper than a chrome one & $2 cheaper than the price on the website.

  2. a guy comes in today wanting warranty on some Bosch spark plugs , says they are no good. wants to try another brand. after some questioning , he then says the car was running poorly before and it's not any better with the new plugs

this is the spark plugs fault?

  3. I was in line and heard a girl ask where the blinker fluid was. She said her boyfriend told her that her blinker was out of fluid that's why it didn't work. Couldn't help but laugh my ass off.

  4. Had some idiot tell me that I didn't want the copper spark plugs since they could damage my car's computer and platinums were the way to go. These were for an old computerless Chevy and stock AC Delco replacement plugs. I didn't even respond, I just had him ring me up. Some people need to be edu-muh-cated.

I went to auto zone and said I needed a battery with more cold cranking amps and told him I had a international. He said who makes international? I said international then he looks up a battery and long behold it's the same one I have in front of him that is'nt powerful enough. So I grabbed my battery and went to walmart and got the right one.

i always carry my smartphone (yeah i hear some of you shouting blasphemy). I can usually find it on their website using my mental cross reference when they cant find it on the computer. My counterman at the local oreilly auto parts has begun asking if i have the part number. He has learned i already know what i need. If i dont he is probably gonna be lugging the paper catalog pretty soon......

i should also add, my local oreillys has alot of catalogs covering alot of stuff. But the average counter person doesnt know they exist. When my usual guy isnt in there it gets....bad.

"sorry they don't make bosch platinum spark plugs for a SBC"

That was followed by me going out to my car pulling one out of the engine and showing it to the parts counter guy.

Biker - want to be - telling me that he did not have the gaskets for my 900 ironhead as I was looking at them on the peg board behind him. Ya, I just love those self proclaimed bikers.

I think your attitude is pretty short sighted> it might well be that this "kid" really did know what he was talking about and was trying to keep you from making am mistake. Since Type F fluid really is for 70's cars ( '77 and earlier Fords) he wasn't far off. It's not just old folks who have some idea of what's going on.

  14. not an auto parts store but a big name tire store...I'm getting a new tire on my daily..while waiting I ask him his prices on wide white wall radial tires for a 15'' rim..he says they haven't made white wall tires since the 60's..10 minutes later he starts going off on a tangent about aliens, black people & gay people while dropping F bomb after F bomb..needles to say I won't ever go back there..especially after getting raped for $130 on a basic cheap tire for a daily driver

Customer who bought three packages of Limo black window tint film for one car because he wanted to have it "really dark" and was intending to put it on in layers.

I won't name any names, but I manage a very large auto parts store in Cincy. I am 28 and you would not believe the kind of stories I could tell you. Some advice.......

Find a real parts store and a real parts guy. aka "NOT AUTOZONE" There is typically at least one really good guy/girl at every store. Find that one and stick to him or her. And yes I have had women work for me that know more than most guys about cars.

I used to work for a shop that did tinting (I didn't tint, I sucked at it). Had a guy come in with 2.5% walmart tint and wanted it doubled up on the back window of his truck. You couldn't see anything out of the window from the inside of the truck in broad daylight. It was just stupid. I have one layer of 5% all the way around on my car, and that's still too damn dark. I keep thinking about taking it off.

If you want to have a good time, tell the parts guy that you need plugs for a 1983 Corvette and the were a one year only plug and have to be THAT plug. Seeing how there was no 1983 Corvette, it's great!

most of the chain stores have untrained help that has to have a computer tell them the part number and location. I went into an O"reillys and asked fror a set of spark plugs by number and was asked what they fit, told them it didn't matter, they had to have a vehicle to look them up so I told them they were going in a 30 Ford. They said they were the wrong plugs, I already knew that since it had a Winfield head with 14mm plugs. I also asked to see if they could get the power steering control valve for a 60 Thunderbird and the answer I got was " what is that". Just like shopping Wal-Mart.

Hey that's good to know, I'm usually fresh out of plutonium but I've always got a few beer cans and banana peels. Kind of hard to find some Lybians to trade pinball machine parts with anyways.

Now I'm gonna have to go dig that movie out so I can watch it again, for the millionth time, thanks a lot...

There is an Auto Parts store behind our Fire Station. We still have two Hall Scott gas engines the two reserve apparatus. I was in the parts Store to purchase replacement spark plugs. A customer was asking about how to clean out his carburetor. He was told to "Buy this kit and it will boil out the carburetor parts in a bucket." He declined the offer and left. One hour later we answered a house fire alarm. Yep, it was him. He was "boiling out the carburetor in a bucket in his gas cooking range. Guess what? No house, no car, no carburetor to worry about either.
