Its George Bolthoff. He later developed Can Am motors I believe after leaving Engle Cams.

I think that this is Tony Nancy. Not sure of the track.

Would this be considered an Ultra/Stocker? Injectors and straight tube axles lead me believe that it is.

Boltoff ran AA/D (gas powered), not AA/FD (nitro). I never saw the car run, but I've heard it had a rolling idle that would stand your hair on end.

Larry, You're right, I saw the car run often with both Chev and Chrys...was standing behind the line at the Smokers meet, maybe '62 or 63, George came to the line to race Gordon Collett for the final top gas round....I never forgot the idle sound that the car made...don't know how many degrees in the mag, or what the barrel valve was set at, but never heard a gas car sound so wicked (too wicked, it seems, because George blew up right off the line and Collett took the win)...

I found some old negatives the other day. Thought some of you would enjoy a couple. These were in an envelope labeled 1967.

Cecil County Drag-o-Way. Comp Eliminator run offs. C/Altered coupe class winner against A/Altered class winner.

This is a cool picture because it contains what was and what is to be in terms of the evolution of the gasser. I would surmise the time frame is around 1970-71 or so, thus making the class legal Willys in the far land an exceptionally rare bird by then.

    Traditional.

  16. Looks like an A-B/Gasser for '69-'70 to me.

I'll agree. I would think that by 69 that Pro Stock and Funny Car were already pretty well established and moving away from this kind of "match race" stocker. That leaves the Gas class if he wanted to run it at a sanctioned event.

    Maybe?

OK, I looked it up and it was built as a NASCAR Ultra Stock racer. Looks like the class probably died around 1969, leaving it as a car without the class it was built for.

True, but note that Willys is also being classified as a B/A as noted on the driver side window. It also sports the A/Gas insignia as well, but apparently on that day the Willy's owners found themselves shelved with the altered class. Besides what made the Opel an "altered." An increase in engine set back? Back then B/A ran 5 pounds per cu inch too, just like A/gas. They were just allowed a 25% engine rule, not 10% like their gasser counter parts. Oh, and maybe the removal of some funky non operable headlights.

Anyway you look at it it does look like the "Old" Willys beat the "New" Opel off the line! Ha! Ha! Got to love this thread! Thanks Royal Shifter for starting this thread. Never in 50 years of reading hotrod magazines and looking at the pictures in them I would never have dreamed that there would be anything top them but this thread puts it all to shame! Thanks again Royal Shifter and you get my vote for "Governor of the Hamb"

    From 104 degress Texas!
