i recently stumbled upon a source for oil w zinc for flat tappets. For you in the north east Brad Penn has their specially labeled for flat tappets and very reasonably priced. is there anything new in the south east in particular gulf coast of florida? yeah i have done the research more than once. have used lucas. looking for something new? thanx for your help
Seriously you can just order it, Brad Penn is not only available in the north east. There should be someone in your area carrying it as well.
Many speed shops stock Brad Penn, very easy to find, and you can order it direct if not. My neighbor has it stock in his shop in Napa, all they use for breakin IIRC, they have a dealer locator on their website
In the Car Craft article done by Jeff Smith, where they sent out oils to an independent lab, the Brad Penn stuff did not fair very well. The zinc content was 1,073 ppm and phosphorous was 931 ppm - some of the lowest of all tested The old SG rating for oil, before this all became a problem, was 1200-1300 PM - so you can see the Brad Penn didn't meet this - and this was their Break In Oil that is supposed to be a bit more fortified than the regular oil. Not looking for an argument, just passing along facts
Man this again. There has to be (lab proven) a number of TOP 5 or so oil/ additive that do the job. Lets get the list and stash it in the archives.
So, you are disputing an independent laboratory's factual findings? Do you have anything to back up your statement, or is that simply your opinion?
Polaris Labs is highly respected in the oil field and they are the lab that was used. Sorry that your cynicism gets the better of you
I AM with you slammed. I posting a thread on what oil to use with my Flat Tappet Cam andafter reading all the dif replies I CLIMBED up on the ROOF!! Then I climbed back down drained 10 quats of Royal Purple(not nec good for flat tappet cams) and replaced with BRAD PENN!!! NOW Here I go reading again??? CCraft says Brad Penn doesn't have enough Zinc!! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!
TORCO is an excellent source for Zink protection and they make an additive that will bring the levels up to where you need it with any of your favorite brands.
One thing to remember in the use of additives is too much zinc is not a good thing either. FYI Valvoline has an online coupon for $15 off on the purchase of their VR-1 synthetic oil.
I thought Brad Penn was specifically for engines reqiuring Zinc??? WTH. Is there merit to the Car Craft article?? I havent wiped my Mech Cam yet? I just want to buy Oil and not Mix
Was this Brad Penn 20w50 racing oil, though? I think this is supposed to have more zinc than their other oils. It's what I've been using lately.
I decided to choose an oil I can buy inexpensively over the counter in the parts of the country where I drive. The oil I picked is Shell Rotella. It can be found anywhere in 15W40, if you look around, you can find 10W30. Available at any farm store, O'Rielly, Auto Zone, Wall Mart, and every truck stop I ever saw. It is meant for diesles, go where diesel fuel is sold.
I read they backed off on the Zinc because of emissioms w Rotella???? Used to be good-I was reading again
I ran reg. valvoline for along time with the lucas break in additive, then switched to vr1 NON synthetic 'racing oil' heres a good link on this subject from another forum i visit alot http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=381780
Rotella and Dello are diesel oils. Newer Diesels now have particulate filters which become clogged from the ingredients in the older oil, so both brands have been re-formulated with a lot less Zinc and Phos. Diesel oils are also for lower rpm engines and may not have the anti-foaming characteristics of a high performance gas engine oil...probably alright for a late model roller cammed stocker, but not for something you are going to beat on.
reading isn't for losers afterall. All the reading I do paid off-I was RIGHT!!!! NOW WHAT ABOUT BRAD PENN???? HELP
According to oldblue's link above on post #23, Brad Penn is OK. I've read previously the Brad Penn 10W-30 oil contains almost 1500 ppm ZDDP. Thats what I use. Use your Brad Penn and don't worry. That new Rotella is a Gotcha as it no longer contains a high Zinc level.
when they lowered the zinc content in the rotella , they took, "advanced soot control" of the front of the jugs, about 8 months ago if i remember right
I have had pretty good luck with the high zinc Amsoil. Best part is that my neighbor sells it so I only have to wander across the street to buy it.
Check out the information on the Alliance Vendor site, product is sold here www.zddplus.com May be the cheapest and best way to go - even Big Daddy Don G. likes the product.
The 28 responses is the reason i posted in the first place. as i said i did the research and wanted to know what was currently going on so i came to the best source of current info that i know. Based on Brad Penn info their 10-30 is higher zinc than 20-50. roughly 1200 vs 1000 ppm (min). again thanx everyone for their input we all need to keep current!
