Holy cow, that's a lot of production. Would have taken me at least a week to get that far. That's anywhere from 7 to 12 showers for me. How often do you take one?
Ah I see so the belts just go over it to change the direction of pull. 10-4 Just out of curiousity, Are you going to paint the floors to color match the body or is that going to get a carpet? Just wondering because it doesn't have that finish as the outside of the shell. Is it going to get sanded smooth? I havn't got the slightest clue about fiberglass workings...
I want this car to be streetable as well so it will get a bit of thin black carpet, the floor is pretty smooth but the underneath of the car will be smoothed off and probably stone chipped the same colour as the body. Fibreglass is a real easy product to use if you follow the laid out rules, its very adaptable.
It was raining here last evening so i had an evening on the lathe sorting my fuel filler and column drop. I found a lump of 2.5" stainless round bar in the scrap bin so managed to get both bits out of a chunk of it. Started with this And produced these I had an old motorbike flip cap laying around so gave it a repolish and made a flange from a bit of sheet stainless, put it together and got this Made up a couple of tapped spigots and welded them to the boss for the column support, The bolts that hold the rose joints in place also hold the collar in place on the column, they have points which engage in small holes in the column outer. Fitted the filler cap and it had stopped raining so made up the filler tube from some stainless bend offcuts, nothing wasted here.
First I have to say: A great build!!! Do Your ladder bars join the frame in one point or are they split?
Not that you need to be told this but make sure that the flip cap doesn't beat against the body when opened - for the rest of us stealing all these great ideas!
This build gets better and better mate. What hot rodding is all about, making something out of nothing... Love it! Cheers man
Your dead right mate, I enjoy making stuff and its individual, nothing wrong with buying parts but its pretty cool to make your own and its cheap too
You have inspired me. I am also looking forward to getting started with the coupe, maybe this winter. We are getting closer with the HJ. Still waiting on the motor to get finished up.
Langy, Don't shoot the messenger . . . . Just not feeling the column drop. It is clean and simple . . . But just does not seem to fit. I guess I am just use to column drops made out of steel plate. Seems to need something more to it. Dave
Langy...... Your a Master Fabricator..... Lucky it rained that day otherwise we would have missed out on this great piece of fabrication.
Thats kind of the point... To build something of your own and makeit different than things your used to seeing. I'd say Lippy has got things well covered
Interesting build and your chassis ingenuity is great! Regarding rear end....I agree with you the 8 inch would be a weak point. "BACK IN THE DAY" a lot of these gassers were set up with a 57-64 Pontiac or Oldsmobile 9.3" rear end. Don't know how period correct your are trying to go but that would be a consideration. Really a strong piece and if you can locate one I know a buddy of mine found the parts for his from an outfit in Texas. The site is fabcraftmetalworks.com . Good luck with the build and keep the posts coming I look forward to following.
