  1. Ha ha there is a town in missouri like that. I think it is "Zion". You read the sign and when you go by it turn around and read the sign on the other side of the road directly across from it! lol

Paul, nice story thanks. Like you, I always prefer the road less traveled. I like the burger stand too. I like to stop and support places like that whenever I can, even if they are slower, more expensive and possibly even not as good. I'd still rather go to places like that than a chain places in a second without even a hesitation. You get life and stories from places like that, not the chains. My hamb tag line is along those lines.

Some fast and good looking work on those covers. You sure as hell don't waste any time. Probably take me about 3 months to find enough time to get them done like that. And after a long hot road trip like, I think all I would have been doing is sitting back under the shade trees with a icy cold lemonade or tea.

If I ever get my project truck done enough to drive out of state, I'm going to take a trip out your way. I always kind of wanted to drive route 50 starting on the west end near here in Ca over back to then east end in MD where I grew up. Basic a straight shot right across the middle of America. Looks like you aren't too far off of it along the way. I might need to avoid the 100+ days though. Not use to anything close to that anymore, it would probably kill me.

  3. It's not the heat... it's the mosquito's!!!

I gotta get me a travlin job!

So, I rushed home after my journey out west just in time to sell yet another Chevy 235 six cylinder engine (I have lots of them) to a very small town fire dept. in Eastern KS about 200 miles from me. The mayor of the town arrived and picked out the one he wanted, we let him see it run and loaded him up. Seems they over revved their old 53 Chevy firetruck and overheated the engine. They are kinda in a panic and are down to one firetruck and it is gr*** fire season. He said his son was the fire chief and his other son has the only repair shop in town so they will get it going asap.

After that, I went to a garage sale that one of my co-workers had told me about and mentioned there was an "old car with skinny tires". It turned out to be a restored 30 Model A coupe w rumble seat. Too rich for my blood (asking $22,000) but very nice. I did buy a real nice mechanical tin toy from the 1920's at the sale.

This morning I left early again and drove about 40 miles thru the countryside to buy another chevy 235 six cylinder engine. Looks like a nice one. I cleaned it up and it looks good. New paint and testing will come next. Always something to do out here in the middle of nowhere----:)

Paul, you should become a tour guide of "Back Road America". You could do your deliveries, at the same time as you could fill a small 1930"s HAMB friendly hot rod bus, with vacationing HAMBers. That's it, a new business venture.

  12. Thanks for the images, I have not been through Rush Center since the late 80's.....

Now I have added the valve covers I got from Lippy to the ones I already have. Some of these were given to me by Bobwop and some I have bought at swap meets. Hoping to buy more as time and money allow.

"Back Road America" ---man, I like the sound of that. Sounds like a great TV show idea. Me and my personal bodyguard GL cruising the backroads making new friends while fighting crime. We could even pull my clown car behind his yellow 55 g***er. :)

  22. Thats a GREAT idea! Paul, wouldnt you need a body guard and food taster to see if someone was trying to do away with the "National Treasure"? Sounds like a cable TV series to me, hmmmmmmmmmm.....

  23. Oh ****, I should have read the last post Paul, be fore I posted. GREAT minds think alike!!!!

I hate to dash the dream, but I fear that clapped out yellow Chevy won't have enough power to pull the clown car.

I would provide a loaner car that could get the job done!

perhaps a Chrysler station wagon with floor shifted manual ******...factory trailer hitch already in place, room for the entourage (that tatted up chick from Pickers) and a nice big storage area that could double up as sleeping quarters.

If Roger Welsch can talk about tractors and cow pastures that double as golf courses from Nebraska on one of the major TV stations on Sunday mornings. It should be a piece of cake for you to to get a show on the Speed Channel. I think he got his start by writting books. Not much different then talkin on the HAMB.
