Sander, you are the man. That thing is bitchin. Funny thing, I looked at your pictures, and saw the house, thought that looks like the south bay, looked over, Redondo Beach. Grew up on the corner of MacKay and Harriman, the house used to be about that color. Lawndalian now. Bitchin car, Mike.

i believe it depends on what you're building....if it's a hot rod you're going with a traditional rod,a SBC is ok,or a caddy flathead if you can get ahold of it! it depends on what period you're trying to recreate if that's the route you're goin..in the 50s the guys upgraded to whatever they could afford,if it were some nice parts for the stock flatty, or cramming whatever BIGGER engine they could afford in,whatever you want...also,if you're building it as a custom, remember that you dont EVER have to raise the hood.if you're making it for COMFORT,put whatever you want in it,air bags, power brakes, power steering....whatever.it's your car, just remember that and you'll be fine!

Flathead is the only way to go, my father kept the flathead in his '50 Ford. It is about the most reliable car he has. A properly built flathead are very reliable and it is a ford in ford. That it the way it suppose to be.

Right now Sweet Pea's has the flathead in it...

But as soon as we find a 302/c4 combo in decent shape thats coming right out :)

Don't worry the flathead is gonna have a good home in a Model A modified.

Flathead/4 sp toploader if you can afford it, or 302/toploader for an easy swap

A flathead with a Holley 500cfm 2bbl with an electric choke, ignitor kit in the stock distributor, and a GM (what!?) one wire 85 amp alt. It starts up every morning and runs cool.

  13. So, how well does a hemi fit into one of these? Will the stock starter clear the steering?

Most (all the ones I've seen) adapters for short-bell Hemi move the starter to the right.

  15. Ford Solid Lifter 302 with some Shelby goodies. It's still a pig but will do 65 all day long on the freeway.

302 ford w/ a T5 trans in mine. While Flathead is the obvious answer, this SBF setup is good for me as i drive the hell out of my cars on a daily basis, on road trips and all.

  22. My first car was a 50 crestliner....built a 53 Merc 255 for it when I was 16..
Later on [28 years]I bought this 49 club coupe with a fine-running flathead 6. I swapped in a chevy 355 with a 350 turbo aand maverick rear. Hauled ass!

Currently 350/350, but as soon as I can it's getting a 331 Cad with maybe a sideshift LaSalle, (hooked to the stock column shifter)

Flathead is great in my roadster, but like Tony said, a shoebox is too much car for a flatty.

I love 302's- getting one in my '58 Ranchero right now, it's a driver and I like 302's, but it's a 60's engine, so I just want something cooler and more historically appropriate in the shoebox.

I hate to talk about what I'm GONNA do, cause you know how that goes... but that's my plan.
