Here's a picture of my grandfather's straight 6. It carried he and my grandmother on their first date, which is pictured here. The picture beside it is my wife and I recreating the picture at the same house my with '31 Chevy with the original 194 straight six still in it. 57 Chevy 150. Bought it from the original owner, an older lady who's father bought it for her brand new. Rebuilt the original 235. Before this car I cared or knew nothing about straight 6s. Now I love them. My then fiance, now wife.
What?,no Hudsons. Well,I did kill a piston on the way to Viva this year but my 308 Hornet motor will be back soon better than ever.
Will this answer your question. The one on the stand with the exposed headers is from Self's Racing in Durant, OK and it pumps out 800 plus hp. There is a 261 Chevy here in my area with a 12 port head and it is a daily driver. It runs like it was a V-8. Normbc9
Great thread here. I love the straight six! I have a '57 Chevy 235 CI in my '23 t-bucket which I appropriately named, "Six-Shooter". The engine runs and sounds great. However, someday I'd like to change to a Fenton split exhaust manifold and upgrade the Rochester BC carb.
I currently have a 1959 Ford Custom 300 with a 223 Straight Six. I have had a few Chevy 235's and enjoyed them alot. I don't mind the Ford 223 but it differs a bit from the Chevy 235. If anyone has experience with the Fords 223 I'd appreciate any advice on different set ups on this engine. I havn't seen alot of parts around anywhere.
I picked up a 1955 first series chevy truck about a year ago. It has a three speed manual trans. What five speed manual trans out there would be any easy swap without major engineering
Same here, I know cliffords and offy make parts for them.... but ..... I want to know performance wise was this little 223 is capable of. I can't find much info on it. Is it worth building, I'm afraid I can't find parts for the thing down the road....
Earllier in this thread I mentioned my '46 Fleetmaster coupe with a 235. Well as fate would have it, I lucked up and got the entire drivetrain(216) and suspension from a garage kept '50 Styleline coupe that's receiving an update. This will go to my '50 Fleetline Special Moredoor. They were almost free, and alomst free is good.
The straight sixes aren't done yet. The Self Racing Chevy(Durant, OK) 4200 is producing some engine Dyno numbers that will astound you. There are some 216's ,235's, 250's and 292 from GM and the 240 and 300 Fords plus the amazing MOPAR Slant Six which still gets a lot of attention. There are others too. Niormbc9
I've got a chevy 292 straight 6 that'll be matched to a TH350 tranny. Still waiting to get it into my 50' (has a little ways to go). Hopefully shell be riding the gravel before winter!
This is a `53 235 eventually going in to my`39. Fentons and an Edmunds set-up when I can find some matching carbs. Bit difficult to get stuff in the UK ! -
Make sure you install a heat kit when you put on the Fentons or it will run like crap until it warms up and it would be worse where you live then it is here. I fought mine for 10 years until this year when I put the heat kit in,now if I can just get rid of the rattle in the #2 cylinder without a major undertaking I might get satisfied with this 235.
I installed a 302 GMC in a 51 GMC last winter. I can't attach photos but you can see some video on youtube...dieselgeek jimmy
Sorry for the delay. I was going to gather up some info. But basically; Oil passages were drilled in the crank journals, rods converted to insert bearings, and a GMC 228 oil pump employed. The dippers and oil shooters were disposed of. Particulars can be found in California Bill's speed manual.
I bought my '46 Fleetmaster from a friend of mine.....just by his description and some pics. I get it here and do a few minor things to get it running. Well, not having an inline for awhile I wasn't sure what to expect. Hmmmm, this 215 runs great! Lots of power and pretty quiet. I'm impressed so far. It's for sale cause the wife says you can't keep 'em all! It's a pretty hard car to try and hide!!!!!! The other inline I had was a '74 Ford 150 with a 300.....now there's a motor. Couldn't kill it! The body fell off first from rust. Sold it and far as I know...it's still on the road!
Thinking about pressurizing a 216 or early 235 since I think my 57 235 has a issue with the sleeved cylinder, should be able to come up with a 216 for almost free or paid to haul it away.
Here is my 1951 Fleetline with the stock engine and 3 speed manual trans. Restored, Offenhauser intake with dual Rochester carbs, Fenton headers, Wayne covers etc. Runs great and sounds like a real bomb. Raaaaaaapp! Love it!
My 216 in my 40 Chevy was converted this way back in the 1950's .....the motor is still running strong today!
Heres my rebuilt 235 .060 over. And heres a video of how it sounds! Straight 1-1/2" pipe all the way out
here is mine (225 slant 6) in my little off topic 66 valiant also here's one done on the t.v show stacey david's gearZ http://www.youtube.com/user/StaceyDavidsgearZ?blend=7&ob=5#p/search/0/3K95OEKP22k
