I agree with Black Jack The woman I got my Sports coupe from ask me if I would appraise her car. Then she ask me to buy it after I gave her a price. It belonged to a Guy that I was in the guards with 40 years before. He had started to restore it but never finished before he died. Bottom line I paid what she ask.

This could be a double edged sword, telling the wrong spouse what vehicles are really worth, can turn against you just as many ways. (Divorce settlements!) No easy answers here. There's probably a lot more guys on here, that have been hosed by their X's, than there are widows taken advantage of.....Hate to see it happen either way.
not just on this situation but.... i'm ridin the fence here ? if you pay too much your a dumb*** .. threw away yer hard earned money.. if you get a screaming unbelievable deal your a criminal dirtbag and even more so if ya flip it quickly w/o spending a nickel every one talks about gettin grannys cherry old car for cheap.....scoopin up treasures the the widow/ her dumb *** kids are s****pin or given away.. if ya save every old piece of iron your a hoarder if ya sell something gotten free from friends for a profit with out paying some to the friend yer a robber hmmmmm standing in the short line to overpay seems the only right thing to do these days. ? when is it ok to get the greatest deal ever ..? ? who do you get some money back from when you are way over charged ? spose ther is phone AP for that decision now
I did the conversion from British pounds to US dollars. The guy bought the cars for L1700 ($2770). He has offers for L4000 ($6518) and L6000 ($9778) but thinks he can get more. Here is a case of a guy that kept his spouse in the dark about the value of his cars sitting in the garage. Too bad he had a crook as a friend that maintained the cars.

It's the cir***stances surrounding the transaction. Each "deal" is unique. But ****ing an old person is never OK...
Agreed. I have gotten some smokin deals on cars before but I let the seller set the price. And when I knew it was a smokin deal didnt try to jew them any at all even though I knew I could. Also they were adults and not "out of the loop". Once bought a running 62 Cadi for $700 bucks from a lady. She set that price with out me offering any amount. And her husband also knew I was paying that and was ok with it. They just wanted it to go to a good home. I still have the car, so it wasnt like I bought it to turn. Hell I've even been given a few cars to avoid them being s****ped but that was at the free will of the owner. Ripping off some unknowing widow who asked you for an honest valuation is out of line. And it will develop a reputation for the guy involved.
Age and experience tell me that while this is de****able conduct, you cannot go through life crusading for every evil or wrongdoing. There is no point in telling the widow - ignorance is bliss. But you might casually relate the tale as you have done here - word spreads like wildfire on the web. Be very careful about slander (verbal) and libel (written) though. The laws in Britain are pretty tough and you can be sued for either even if what you said can be proven to be true. My advice is to let sleeping dogs lie - thieving s*** is s*** and will not change. You are tilting at windmills if you think otherwise....
I think its mostly a judgement call. If I'm at a swap meet and some guy is selling a 3 deuce setup off of a 427 Galaxie for $100, I wouldn't advise him of the low price; I would give him the Franklin, get the heck outta Dodge and acknowledge my good fortune HOWEVER, if someone in entrusting you to provide an honest ***essment, or is unfamiliar with the marketplace (like the above-mentioned bereaved widow), I would be obligated to be upfront and hope, perhaps, for a price break afterwards. STILL, if the grouchy old guy around the block with the Corvette on jack stands for ten years offers me the car for substantially less than what its worth, I would probably make like Swap Meet Guy and do the deal. Face it, a big part of the fun in this hobby (for me anyways) is scoring a car/part/tool at a swap meet/garage sale/cl***ified ad for a great price. I don't ever feel inclined to inform the seller that they have underpriced something - unless they are the proverbial babe in the woods. Just my 2 cents...
I have emailed him and said; I will leave it at that - if he cuts up rough about it then I will go to his local Trading Standards Department. The reality is that he will brag on his deal making skills and it will get around without me naming names.
blackjack I don't think anyoe will ever suggest that you were part of the deal. It is not worh much in the real world but you can always use me for a reference. Someone asked what a bloke is. I am not an expert on English in other parts of the world or even other parts of the united states for that matter but I am pretty sure that a bloke and a dummy or idiot is close to the same thing. I think that it is fairley strong language as my step mom is English and I have never heard her use it when speaking ill of someone.
I believe that this kind of guy is exactly the kind that Ryan was identifying in his thread "Fear & Loathing The Cl***ic Car Dealer ". I would distance myself from guys like that.
at 86 my greatgrandma was selling off grandpa's trucks after he p***ed away and some kid came to look at his old F2 fully restored with a shiny Merc flathead v8. She told him to make an offer and he offered $500, and stated that those engines were junk and she'd be lucky to get a couple hundred for it, the body was the only thing good on it, Well she asked him if he was serious and he laid it on thicker and heavier as he went. She told him she'd go in and get the ***le for him and came out with grandpa's 45-70 and sent a 400 grain hard cast flying over his head! I only wish I was there to see the expression on his face! GO GRANDMA!!
i have done valuations for estates i have found some way underpriced deals while shopping swaps-garage sales i have directed familys how to dispose of unwanted family treasures basicly most people are lazy and just want transactions over with quickly.. waiting for a bigger profit vs. time and trouble just ain't happening most people can not decide much more than cream or sugar.. valuing estates i have had the remaining family come thru and take all the "high priced " "old junk "they were not aware of the day before i have walked in to sales where the divorcing wife was giving away all her husbands stuff.. i have given advice to value and where to sell or dispose of a lifetimes ac***ulation only to have the family refuse to pay my fee and dump all of it in a dumpster so they could get back to their own "lives"...bah" its all junk"
I once made a deal with a very young lady similar to that. She traded me for a pizza and a movie. What I got was way more valuable than the pizza and movie. I felt so bad I kept trying to trade her better and better things for a year and I was still getting the better deal. I wonder where she is now and if she still like's it. Pizza I mean.

I have had a response from him and he says that he has known the family for many years, having maintained all their cars, and that they wanted him to have the 2 cars as a gift but that he offered them the sum of £1700 as a part payment and then repaired the man's daughter's car free of charge after it suffered a broken cambelt and other garages were wanting thousands to repair it. He says everyone, including the executor of the will was happy with the situation. He's now saying that one car was in exceptionally poor condition and undrivable. I have no way of confirming this story but, as they say, guilty until proven innocent. Perhaps he was just bragging on his deal making skills and over-stated it. I think I'll leave it to his conscience and karma.
