I'll be the first to admit that pre-beautification junkyards
were NOT a pretty sight to most motorists:eek:. But I loved
'em, and I'm sorry that what's left of them keeps
dwindling away as owners die off, crush out for cash, or
cars just disappear in Rust Belt rot.:( I've surely spent many
a happy hour scrounging, photographing or just plain
    gawking in old-timey junkyards.

(YellerSpirit, were the recent junkyards you posted located
in Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire? Any idea?:confused:)

  7. Call me crazy, but in Yellerspirits picture #28304 of the dog teams in Stowe, VT, there is a guy standing alongside the road that has to be 7' 6" tall. Am I seeing things? He towers over the cars. He must've been a famous guy in Stowe, because you couldn't miss him. Check it out.

He's standing on a bumper but at first he does look a bit tall.

    Title:
Car Junk Yard on a Hill

Town:
Hardwick

County:
Caledonia

State:
Vermont

Date:
1955 - 1965
Description:
The photo shows a car junk yard on a hill beside a paved road. This flat-topped hill may be a river terrace. There is a car traveling on the road with guard rails and utility lines following along the road. There is a calm body of water in the foreground with a man made bank out of large boulders. A field is below the junk yard and bordered by a wire fence. A few deciduous trees are scattered with the hill slopes in the background forested. Priscilla Grimes writes on2007-2-11: This looks like the junkyard in Hardwick, on Route 14. The date would be the late 1950's or very early 1960's. If it is the same place, and looks like it, my father in law had this farm and sold it in 1958.

Yeah, even when I was growing up in the '50s and '60s, lots of folk carried two or even three spares in the trunk. They'd run tires until the cord came through, then run 'em 'til they gave out. Time to swap another tire from the trunk!

  17. Reminds me when we were kids in high school, running cheap cars & cheaper tires. One of the local gas stations sold used tires for $5 so we'd get 2 or 3 mounted and go down in front of the high school, grease up the rears then 'lay rubber and do yogi's', smoke up the joint really good then hightail it. Good times & cheap thrills, something today's kids would never get away with, thanks to us delinquents! :D

The pics don't do the Fox justice, it really was a palace.

As Ralphie said in "A Christmas Story", "My old man's spare tires were actually only tires in the academic sense. They were round, they had once been made of rubber." :)

Ron, that's funnier than shit! BUT, that's how things USED to be.
But you're right, back then the principal would shake his head; TODAY, they'd check the cameras and have you brought on charges of destroying pavement -- or some such crap.
