Im in need of some expert help here, im working on a 66 f100, we have a 1996 351w motor that we swapped out for the original tired 352, we are also swapping the 3speed manual for a c6 automatic.

Our biggest concerns right now are with hooking up the shifter (we are looking at a lokar trans mount shifter) on the 96 transmission we have here you can notice in the picture that there are two shifter linkage arms , im told one is for shifting the gears and the other is for the detent(down shifting) the detent on this trans looks like it is run in the valve body with electronics thru a plug. IS THIS TRUE???? how do we get around this? - the other is how can we run our 1966 speedometer with the transmission we have. thanks for your help , im afraid we may have the wrong transmission for this truck. Do we need an old C6 or can we make this one work???? Im a hard core chevy and panhead guy and my son has drug me into this world , so you ford guys should be proud of him. hahaha (as am i)

In general, speedometers are calibrated to the same ratio and any calibration difference between makes is adjusted via the drive gear.

The bigger arm is for the shifting and the smaller one is for the kick down for passing gear, when I put the 460/C-6 in my 66 I used the Lokar trans mount shifter and it came out the hole where the 4 speed shifter. came out. That switch is the neutral safety/back up light switch.

If you are trying to use any part of the 66 mounts remove them and use 69 to 79 smallblock mounts(frame and rubber) and you will have to move the trans crossmember back and redrill the holes.

This looks like the older C6. The long lever is the shifting lever. The electrical switch is the neutral safety and backup light switch. It may have more functions on a 96, like telling the computer what gear it's in. The short lever is the kickdown that would connect to the carburetor.

As far as the speedometer is concerned, it looks like there is a plug in the tail shaft housing for a cable. It might have some type of sending unit instead of a gear. You might be able to see if you remove whatever is in the hole or you can remove the tail shaft housing to see if there is a gear cut into the output shaft. If there is a gear cut into the shaft, you may be able to find the correct setup to work with your speedometer. Ford did use output shafts with different gear pitches which may require the use of a gear box to obtain the correct ratio. If it doesn't have a gear on the output shaft, you might have to change the ouput shaft or use an aftermarket speedo. The digitals use a pickup coil which basically counts the number of revolutions per minute of the drive shaft. The speedometer usually has a series of dip switches to account for gear ratio and tire size. Speedometer shops aren't as plentiful as they used to be but you might have one near you.

I dont have a kick down on mine at this moment and will most likely get a Lokar kick down cable in the future.
